Initially, at least, Apple will be the only vendor of an adapter for the company's
new dock connector format, according to
iLounge sources. The accessory will reportedly cost $10, or $29 in a bundle of three. New Apple USB cables are
expected to sell for $19 apiece.
The sources are reacting to rumors that Apple has yet to offer other companies parts or even specifications for the new connector format. Apple may be hoping to reap a larger share of the potentially major revenues involved; even if it only sells 10 million adapters, for instance, the company will still take in roughly $100 million. With its own stores, and without any competition at launch, sales would likely be amplified.
Even without adapter sales, accessory makers could stand to make significant profits off the new connector design. Many cases, docks, speakers, cables, and other items will no longer be compatible with updated iOS devices, forcing people to buy new gear. The format should premiere with a new iPhone
on September 12th.
