G4 Powerbook - Disc/No Disc

So this G4 powerbook chimes on startup and I get the grey Apple and the spinning gear but no more.

I've connected it via FW target mode to several other Macs and nothing shows up disc wise. Even DU and any other disc recovery tool fail to show any disc. The system profiler shows that something is attached to the FW bus but no actual drive or volume.

I would have thought that if the Mac couldn't see any internal drive (and hence a valid system) all I would get would be a flashing question mark

In addition, I can't get it to boot via a DVD either. Holding the c key down at start gets no further than the spinning gear.
