For me, it's District9.
Original story, different perspective (for once an Alien movie not based in N.America, who'd have thunk?). Some of the best special effects i've ever seen. And it single handedly rekindled my love for the genre.
Cheers

Despite its problems, it's District 9 for me too.
I haven't seen Drag Me To Hell, The Hurt Locker or Food, Inc. though. Those three are at the top of my 2009 yet-to-see list. I haven't seen Inglourious Basterds yet either, and it's something I will eventually see, but for some reason I'm less interested in that one.

Damn. All three of those are fantastic movies.
I think I'd give the nod to Tarantino, though. Inglorious Basterds was amazing.

I think District 9 is the best of the lot - but I think it's been a bad year for cinema in general. It's like Marisa Tomei winning an Academy Award.

Can't say I was a huge fan of Inglourious Basterds either. Found it a little self-indulgent and way too long.

I guess my favorite film this year was probably World's Greatest Dad.

That was the thing about Inglourious Basterds, it was the shortest long movie I've ever seen.

I liked it because the tension in the dialogue scenes was way more intense than any action movie I've seen in a long time. That and the acting was brilliant.

It's been a while since I've seen it but for a guy who usually picks things apart, I had no complaints after the movie. Quite the opposite.

I agree with the District 9 choice.
When I watched Up I was sure it was going to be my favorite movie of the year but District 9 was just brilliant.
The Blu-Ray comes out later this month and I can't wait to watch it again.

I wouldn't be surprised. Considering his muddled history with the likes of thugs, murderers and barbers.

I'll have to check it out then. I just grew tired of Pitt, and Tarantino can be tiring as well.

I wouldn't call myself a Tarantino guy, but I have nothing against him.
...and so everyone discounts my opinion completely, I thought D9 was long.

I read the book, which I liked very much, but in all honesty I have no desire to see those images on the screen. Bring your Paxil.

Definitely My Fair Lady. Or some other movie that didn't actually come out in 2009.
Only new movies I saw this year were the latest HP installment and the Star Trek movie. HP was mediocre, but Star trek was pretty good.

So you're saying there was no good movie in 2009 because you didn't bother going to see movies in 2009?
Are you retarded?

D9 was long - but I thought the story was intriguing enough to maintain interest.

No one is picking "The Twilight Saga: New Moon"? I don't see any other movies calling themselves sagas this year, so it must be important.

Departures 禮儀師の奏鳴曲
It was released in Japan in 2008, but the rest of the world got to see it in 2009, so it is my pick for 2009.

Isn't it a horror movie (or suspense)? I thought those were generally niche...

Yes, niche to a large extent. I happen to like those niche movies, but was not expecting it to be my fave of 2009. Still, it did somehow get a TON of excellent reviews.

I usually like Japanese films, but Okuribito is not one of them. Maybe Hirosue's character ruined it for me. Not sure. My wife loved it though, so it must be me.

How about a comedy, such as the Hangover or Zombieland?
Coraline was pretty cool, as was Watchmen, Up, Harry Potter, Star Trek, 9, just to give the thread some more nominations...

It's funny that Transformers was the third highest grossing movie of the year. I guess this means there will be a third one...

Zombieland was great for the first half-hour, until it degenerated into basically the same movie as Adventureland, which was f**king awful. All in all it left a terribly sour taste in my mouth for that Micheal Serra rip-off kid, whoever he is. Woody was the only saving grace of that movie, without him it would have been an abortion.
The Hangover was enjoyable, but nothing special, Star Trek had to much lens flare, and Watchmen was pretty cool but it seemed like the source material had to much information to properly fit into movie format.
After re-watching Inglourious Basterds a few nights ago it gets my pick. The tension and dialogue are top-notch, and it is long but doesn't feel that way due to an overall engrossing story.
I've read The Road and I'm looking forward to the movie.

Terrible long as it may be, I'm interested in what the Director's cut will turn out like. I agree with your analysis, however.

It had a limited run restricted to art house cinemas, I think. In DC it played at Landmark Theatres. I didn't manage to see it, and I don't think it's out yet on DVD. I'm very much looking forward to it when it arrives on Netflix, though.

Good movie, but Children of Men was 2006.
--
Saw Star Trek, and just got the Blu-ray, but I was not impressed by Nero or the gadzillion plot holes to put it at the top of the list.
Coraline didn't impress me so much. Neither did Potter. And I didn't bother to go see Watchmen.
