Since I do nothing else with my FireWire ports, could I modify a firewire connector and use its power to power a drive, using a regular 4 pin drive power connector?

yes, firewire can power a hard drive. i use a notebook drive in a dvico momobay case and it's bus powered. for obvious reaons, you will need to take into account the drives power requirements. and don't forget to use a 6-pin firewire cable (4 pins for data, 2 for power).
