Do electric cars work out to be better for the environment, or are the batteries/battery acid just as bad as fossil fuel?

That guy needs to shut up about 'choosing the cars styling'. He just 'chose' to go and buy an Ariel Atom without the engine.

That's a good question. They still use energy, even with being 100% electric. You'd have to plug them in, and that would require more power from the power plant. If your area has a coal burning power plant, then that isn't very healthy for the environment. Also, batteries deteriorate fairly soon, and they'd need to be completely replaced every few years.... so... yeah, it would depend on how clean the power source was, and how much energy it uses to make another battery... not just the production, but the energy needed to remove everything from the earth, etc.

That said, electric cars are only viable in very mild climates with a fairly warm temperature year round. Batteries performance drop DRASTICALLY in cold weather, and creating heat from electricity is extremely inefficient. If you had an electric car that had a range of 150 miles in california, that same car would have a range of less than half that if you had the heat on, and even less if you had the headlights on. This is why electric cars, given the current battery technology, aren't very viable solutions.
