When I run the `whois` command from the command line, on a "big name" domain (like `whois google.com`) I get all sorts of CRAP. The results of this are as follows:

At the bottom of that list, it says

To single out one record, look it up with "xxx", where xxx is one of the
of the records displayed above. If the records are the same, look them up
with "=xxx" to receive a full display for each record.

But as you can see, that's exactly what I'm doing to come up with this in the first place. There must be some way to specify only the letter-for-letter domain you are typing in, and not run the whois as a search?

What info are you trying to get out of whois?

This is all being done by a php script though, so the method won't work. But maybe I can just query a better server by default.

you just need to grep the results for this entry, key of the "Domanin Name: GOOGLE.COM$" line. I think $ is the EOL character in regex. then use the "Whois Sever: {0}" to get the URL to run the second whios.

You can parse through the stdout of any Unix command available in your shell via PHP.
