Who makes the 80 & 100GB drives for the new Powerbooks? Is it Seagate?

And apart from the size are there any differences between them?

Thanks B_2

I don't have mine with me at the moment, but if I remember correctly my 80 is a Fujitsu.

The 100GB is 5400RPM and the 80GB is 4200. Oddly enough, the 80GB actually has a lower seek time (12ms) than the 100GB (12.5ms).

All the current Powerbook drives are 5400rpm- 60, 80, 100GB. If something else is shipping, then Apple is mislabeling and incorrectly advertising the Powerbooks.

If I am not mistaken, the 80GB is a 5400rpm drive.

He says "for the new Powerbooks", so I took it to mean the currently shipping models, which are new.

My 12" rev. d PB has a ST9100823A (Seagate) for spec check link:

http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/...81,635,00.html

Just thought you might like to know that my pb came with a 100G at 5400rpm. For what its worth.

BUT I like the Whisper-quiet load/unload acoustics comment on seagate's webpage. We (seagate and myself) have a difference in the meaning of whisper-quiet. Do not get me wrong its not overly noisy but its NOT whisper-quiet.

Clearly Apple is using several drive vendors in the new PowerBooks. I've seen reports of Seagate, Fujitsu, Hitachi...

FWIW mine is luckily a very quite Hitachi 80GB

I have this one in my 15", and it's a lot quieter than my Travelstar 80GB 5400 RPM drive was in my TI.

If your powerbook has a seagate does it still have a 5 year warranty? So if it dies out of AppleCare and you don't mind cracking open the case could you send just the drive back to seagate instead of Apple for replacement? Or do they not honor this because its an OEM non-retail drive.
AT&T iPhone 5S and 6; 13" MBP; MDD G4.

Regardless of drive brand, it's only covered by Apple's warranty.

I've found that some of the HD vendors will honor their warranty if you deal with them directly. I've had HDs replaced after the computer mfgr's warranty had expired.

The 100GB Seagate Momentus drive in my Powerbook is the quietest drive I have ever owned. I honestly NEVER hear it.
