I'd totally use this. I wonder if it's officially been submitted for approval?

App Store rejection in t minus 10, 9, 8, ...
I'd love wireless syncing. But if Apple hasn't done it they'll probably never allow a third-party app to do it.

My issue with this is the speed. Move a bunch a files around between computers and you will see the speed issue.

You mean wireless speed, or overall network speed?

I agree that I'd not always want to sync over wifi. But quite often I don't have a lot of data to sync. Just a few calendar entries or an address book entry. That kind of stuff would be great to sync over wifi.

Calendar/contact/email/notes and even documents should all go over the air (cellular or wifi) IMO.
I guess even syncing an album would only take a minute over wifi, but it doesn't really seem worthwhile. Video would take forever.
Plus USB for syncing gives the device the opportunity to charge (if only for 15 minutes), which isn't a bad thing with the iPhone's battery life.
edit: Podcasts over the air makes sense too, at least audio ones. Video can be kinda big.

I agree with mduell; the stuff that WiFi can easily (and quickly) handle should be allowed over WiFi. Leave media (music or video) to a wired connection because it would take too long wirelessly.

Spare us the MobileRape nonsense, would ya? There's more to wifi syncing than what Apple's rip-off offers.

Wow.
Yes boss. I'll do my best not to offend your sensibilities in the future by pointing out that they're already making money by offering what you're asking for.
There appears to be a deeper, underlying issue here, though. Might I suggest trauma therapy?

No, you're intentionally disrupting what was a pleasant and factual discussion. Being obnoxious once, fine. Doing it repeatedly, no. Just knock it off so those of us interested in discussing wifi syncing on the iPhone can get on with our discussion. Thanks.

Ignoring my comments and referring to the functionality being discussed as "MobileRape" doesn't really make them less appropriate, nor your condescension any more appropriate.
Enjoy your thread, and lack of syncing.

You're doing that. I pointed out that Apple probably won't want to implement this because the feasible aspects of Wi-Fi syncing are already offered as a paid service.
If you see other aspects of syncing that are actually feasible over Wi-Fi (the ones you list are already handled), then it might have been appropriate to respond by mentioning them.
I like how you edited your post to make it look less over-the-top after chiding me for my response.

So what would you like synced over Wi-Fi that isn't already handled by MobileMe (assuming that music and video aren't appropriate to wireless syncing due to the file sizes)?
I was actually interested in on-topic responses to my posts above…

What does MobileMe have to do with an iPod syncing to your Mac?

Currently, MobileMe can sync contacts, calendars, and email accounts between an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad and your Mac(s). It does this over Wi-Fi or 3G cell network.
So, it is syncing, but it's not all the syncing that people may want - like music or photos, for example, and it comes at a price - MobileMe costs an annual fee.

Automatic sync of Address Book and all calendars via Wi-Fi.
The two things Simon specifically mentioned that he'd like.

Haha, goes to show what I do with an iPod that this never occurred to me.

Exactly. Apart from its hefty fee, Mobile Me does not take care of syncing pictures, podcasts, and music. It won't sync any of my ebooks either. All of which I would very much like to do w/o having to connect a USB cable every single time.
Which brings us back to the app in question. Not only does it do all of this, it would most likely also do it for far less than $79. The question is now if Apple will accept this app to the App store.

In all fairness: You didn't mention *any* of those in the posts I replied to above - you merely mentioned an address book entry and a couple of calendar dates.
I agree with your sentiment, FWIW - had you said that, we could've sidestepped a lot of ugly.

Oh the hypocrisy. You never bothered to ask me what you were missing, did you now? No, you didn't. You just assumed you knew it all (as usual) and proceeded to double-post your misguided plug for MM. You actually posted the MM stuff again even AFTER others had given examples of stuff that goes beyond what MM does. It's quite obvious to me that you were trying to troll me. Well congratulations, that worked out just fine. Hope you enjoy the result.

Too bad you didn't go by what other people posted too. Documents, music, podcasts, etc. had all been mentioned by others. Yet you chose to DOUBLE-POST your plug for Apple's rip-off. How was that not confrontational?

Some points:
1) Interestingly, Apple stated that iBooks would sync your place between the iPad app and the upcoming iPhone app. I wonder if this is part of a wider OTA syncing effort or if it will just be for iBooks.
2) They recently purchased a cloud music company. If we had online streaming music, podcasts, etc that could be synced for offline enjoyment, it would go a long way to covering this issue.
3) They are building a huge data center in NC.
Some personal notes. I use MobileMe for OTA syncing of calendars, contacts and emails--works great. I really don't care about music or video syncing over the air, but wireless podcast downloading would be awesome. It is a major pain to do this now as you have to manually download each podcast. Maybe this will be fixed when we get multitasking.

Do you think Apple will let this app pass or are you counting on iPhone OS 4? IIRC it wasn't mentioned during the OS 4 preview.
In any event, I hope you're right.

Hey, they finally got multitasking and springboard folders in for 4, so if it doesn't come sooner they have to have some features for 5, right?

If some little hacker app store dude can do it what is stopping it from connecting to a Pre or Android phone at the other end. I'm sure there is no security in place it is just some weird work around.

It doesn't seem as if Palm had trouble getting the Pre to sync over USB with iTunes... until Apple blocked their route.

They did that in part by faking Apple's vendor ID.

Palm was stupid enough to complain to the USB consortium, who firmly told them to stop breaking USB licensing rules and kindly **** off.

IIRC they did, and thats when Palm busted out the USB Consortium, and then what Harlot said. It was quite amusing to follow that bickering back and forth for the few weeks that it lasted. And yes, Palm was faking the vendor ID through USB identification. They thought there was some grey areas so they tried to abuse it. Fortunately it didnt work for them. Then again, see what happens when companies try to take on Apple, they get bought by HP. And that could be a very bad thing. A new Palm printer....cause HP isn't making much else right...
