Formac FW CD case + HD?

I've just upgraded my iMac HD to 60GB, and tried putting the old drive into my Formac FW CD-RW case, snce it seems to be just a FW to IDE bridge. My Mac can see there is something on the FW port, but the disk does not mount - is there anything else I can do (other than buying a FW enclosure - they are still expensive here)
Can I use an IDE splitter on a FW bridge?
TIA

Firewire IDE bridges are funny things- they have to be flashed to work with either a cd-rw or a hard drive. As you found out, you can't just change to the other type. in face, enclosures like the pyro type come with a flashing software to fix the bridge to work with whichever type of drive you put in ... you have to flash it for whichever type you intend to use.

Thanks for the response - makes sense.
Looks like I'm going to have to look out for a FW case - shame my iMac DV only has one IDE bus else I'd try the external mod.
