TechDirt has a writeup as well.

Summary: Universal Music Group had their master-tape vault burn in 2008. This was their West-coast vault, still on the Universal Studios lot (though they were separate corporations by this point).

UMG proceeded to play down the loss, claiming few master tapes were lost. Then collected millions in insurance, and didn't pass a dime on to the artists. The ones whos' masters were destroyed.

The NY Times has and article that has list. I was surprised to see Paul Anka on it. I understood he was one of the few artists that owned his own master tapes. I took this to mean he had physical possession of them, the way Jimmy Page does with Led Zeppelin's .

Anka may well have owned his tapes, but they have to be stored somewhere, so might as well park them in a dedicated, climate-controlled storage facility.
