I stopped in to pick up my kid from middle school this week. They have a new protocol you have to stop and give your name and ID to a rent-a-senior at the door before going 10 feet down the hall to the office.

What good would that grandpa do, or a metal detector, or a police officer, to someone intent on causing harm? So many ways around this security theater.

I hate living in a world where I have to be frisked every time I have to enter a public building, amusement, or concert.

My wife and I went and did early voting yesterday at the county courthouse here. There were probably a hundred+ people in line. We both noted that they didn't have people entering the building through the metal detector (which they would have had it been a regular business day.) People just walked in and got in line. It seemed kind of odd, considering.

As people shoot up more and more venues, they’ll be everywhere I’m sure.

Where I live and where I come from we don‘t have metal detectors at polling places either. It feels great not to have to worry about being shot. (I‘m not trying to be smug, I just want to point out that being concerned about getting shot when you vote or you bring your kids to school or go to synagogue is not normal and should never be considered normal.)
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Oh, I agree completely. I was just pointing out that, had it been during the workweek, they would have made everyone enter through the metal detectors but, since it was a weekend, they didn't. That and, given that Indiana is a pretty blood-red state, making sure everyone was just a little concerned would have been par for the course.

Sure you don't live under constant threat of violence from any citizen, but I can't imagine anyone sleeps well at night knowing that when tyranny comes their being disarmed by the government will render them helpless.

Are you serious?
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Texas has an enthusiastic death penalty. He'll be alive for a few years, until the appeals run out.

I've never figured out the appeal to shooting innocent strangers. If he's pissed at the government, he might pick a gov office. Or if pissed at Wal*Mart, their local HQ. But why shoot anyone handy?

Because they're easily identifiable as members of a racial/religious/ethnic group that the shooter sees as an enemy?

They weren't handy though, he drove from Dallas to El Paso on purpose to hit a higher percentage of Latino-descended people. Reasons? It wasn't because he was pissed at the government, he was encouraged by his government. His page was full of proTrump rhetoric.

Trump's speech was possibly the most hypocritical, inept thing I have ever heard.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

And the Dayton killer’s Twitter feed was full of lefty tweets and supported Warren
https://www.apnews.com/bdcdc166ee814e069edda52bee6c460e

A Twitter account appearing to be from the gunman who killed nine people in Dayton, Ohio, showed tweets labeling himself a “leftist,” bemoaning the election of President Donald Trump, supporting Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and encouraging people to cut fences of immigrant detention centers.
The El Paso killer was more of a lefty than anything.
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/Ar...cle.aspx/24256

First, the shooter expresses his disdain for both major parties; he decries the Democrats’ open-borders policies while also declaring that “the Republican Party is also terrible,” since the GOP, he says, is “pro-corporation,” and “pro-corporation = pro-immigration.”
The section of his manifesto entitled “Economic Reasons” is by far the most shocking part, in terms of directly contradicting the media spin that this shooter was somehow far-right. He explicitly expresses his support for “a basic universal income,” which he says is the only thing that can “prevent widespread poverty and civil unrest.” He then goes on to support “ambitious social projects like universal healthcare.” Later, he claims that the American lifestyle “is destroying the environment of our country,” and that “the decimation of the environment is creating a massive burden for future generations.”
So clearly this killer supports some of the most openly socialist policies in American political discourse today, including universal income, socialized medicine, and a belief in “global warming.” Yet, according to the media, he is somehow just another “far-right” shooter who has been motivated by President Trump.
Most interestingly, the shooter does mention President Trump…but not in the way the Democrats would hope. Towards the end of his “manifesto,” this Leftist murderer admits that his “ideology has not changed for several years,” and that his “opinions on automation, immigration, and the rest predate Trump and his campaign for president.”

In the most direct refutation of the inevitable media spin, he even admits that “I’m putting this here because some people will blame the President or certain presidential candidates for the attack. This is not the case. I know that the media will probably call me a white supremacist anyway and blame Trump’s rhetoric.”

In a macabre self-fulfilling prophecy, he then states “The media is infamous for fake news. Their reaction to this attack will likely just confirm that.”

Yes, we get it - you're obsessed with labels, and you can't understand people that exist outside of a neat little box.

First, the shooter expresses his disdain for both major parties; he decries the Democrats’ open-borders policies while also declaring that “the Republican Party is also terrible,
All ardent Trump supporters hate the Republican party. Trump was elected because people were tired of both parties and traditional politicians.

The statement, "The Republican Party is terrible!" has nothing to do with whether or not someone supports Trump.

“ideology has not changed for several years,” and that his “opinions on automation, immigration, and the rest predate Trump and his campaign for president.”
Yes - what has become obvious in the past few years is that many, many Americans have held these opinions since long before Trump, but only recently have they felt empowered enough to express them in public. Those opinions are being made mainstream by the President and the media doing everything they can to whip up fear and hatred. And then surprise surprise, we see a huge increase in domestic terrorism, very often aimed at the people that the President and the media are painting as the enemy - Democrats, CNN, African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans.

You can pretend that there's no correlation there, and you would have plenty of company sitting in that position.

TIN FOIL HAT ALERT
Knock it off. If you're going to say something say something, don't wimp out, half imply something, and trail off.

Do you think these attacks were planned by the democrats to distract from some embarrassing or damaging news topics? Man up and say so.
