(hmmm... no new posts on the notebook forum for a while, so...here's one
when i convert or render video, or download large files, i turn down my macbook's screen and keyboard backlight.
is there any way (a script, an app, for instance) to INSTANTLY turn off both? seems silly to fade each one out separately...

You can instantly turn off the keyboard backlight with one of the function keys. On my older MBP, its F8 (looks like an underscore '_'). It may have changed on newer models. As for the backlight, does it really take that long to hold down the key to reduce the brightness to nothing?

no, lol, it doesn't take that long to reduce brightness. but, hey, i'm on a mac, figured there might be a shortcut...ie one key (or combo) to reduce both screen & keyboard...

The unibody MBPs don't have the the keyboard backlight off key, it's replaced with play/pause.

Set it to auto-off after a few seconds. When you walk away from your Mac the KB backlighting will turn off all by itself.

then i have to turn it back on every time i am still working? no thanks...
i found a preference pane called LightMe: i can set a key combo to shut the screen light to 0, or back to max (or wherever); works fine, but i still have to fade in or out the keyboard backlight.
ah well, not a big issue.
thanks all for trying to help!

Umm, no. As soon as you start to type again it will come back on.

You can have both the KB backlight and the screen dim automatically actually.
When you walk away they dim automatically. When you come back and hit any key they both turn back on. No manual intervention required.

I know the key combo for desktops is slightly different, but on MacBooks, Ctrl + Shift + Eject automatically turns off the display.
