Is there a program or a setting on my Apple MacBook that will ALWAYS keep 3-5 gigabytes empty on my harddrive? If I don't have 3-5 gigs free, my computer slows to a crawl so I need a program or a way so that I am never allowed to download to the point where that amount of space isn't free.

Yep, it's called "getting a bigger hard drive."

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

There's no app that will do it. As CharlesS posted your only option is to get a bigger drive and/or an external drive and offload some files.

Not normally. You'd have to modify OS X to specifically use that partition as swap space.

Oh that makes sense. Does OS X only use the startup disk for swap? I never knew.

You can get OS X to use a different disk for swap space - I've done it, but it's a real pain and doesn't really solve anything.

What you need is a bigger hard drive. Get one - you'll be glad you did.

Don't just get a larger drive, get a faster one, too. You'll swear you're using a brand new Mac.
