The U.S. government's future fuel economy regulations could saddle auto makers with steep fines or bar the sale of certain models. Instead of fees ranging from $5 to hundreds of dollars a vehicle sold in the U.S., companies that violate government standards could get hit with penalties up to $25,000 a vehicle beginning in 2016.

I think it's pretty clear what's happening here. Let's call it what it is: the US using dubious environmental regulation to kill competition.
What do you expect from the owners of Government Motors ? They're gonna do whatever is necessary to protect the production of their crappy vehicles.
European car makers in past debates over fuel economy have argued that U.S. regulations are unfair. Because the rules are based on average fleet fuel economy, larger manufacturers including General Motors Co., Ford Motors Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. can offset their sales of gas-guzzlers by selling money-losing smaller cars.
I just hope the Euopeans react in kind and slap "eye-sore" surcharges on all Ford, GM and Chrysler cars sold in Europe.

Or we could say "we'll only buy oil in Euros", at which point the dollar will cease to be the world's reserve currency and the US economy will completely collapse.

Actually, it seems to me as if the government is trying to kill GM. GM only sell one car that gets above the gas mileage requirements, VW Group sells quite a few (in Europe) that can beat those requirements as is. GM already can't beat the 2016 regs, and most foreign automakers will be able to squeeze by as-is right now.

Wait a second... oil dependency (or lack thereof) is dubious environmental regulation?

Truth be told, Europe is getting similar regulations coming in soon. But they apply to the group fleet - so, Porsches are offset by smaller VWs, Ferraris are covered by smaller Fiats, etc.. Aston Martin are buggered (which is a shame, since they're the only cars on the market which aren't hideous).

Meh.
911s still look like 911s, which means golden ass-to-hood ratio.

I never got over them swapping from a flat roof to the current curved one.

That's fair.
Cars have gotten way too pebble like. I think they're all using the same CAD suite or something.

Yet no one complains that planes all look the same. Aerodynamics has an impact on car mileage too.

Almost no one owns a plane for personal use.
(And personal jets look way cooler than commercial airliners)

That will never happen.
Lawmakers will make exemptions for Government Motors, you can bet your balls on that.

The new rules are strongly in favor of some of the big import brands - Honda and Toyota.
While CAFE is stupid, I don't see how it's targeted at imports.

Like I said, it will mostly kill all German car brands in the US.
God knows why the EPA likes the Japanese cars, they are boring like hell.

EU is the new USSR (in the minds of the US government) - a new enemy to unite against. New very very very cold war brewing, I reckon.

I've seen two on the road (could have been the same one twice- but they were nowhere near each other).
For the record- they look just as stupid in the flesh.
