A fairly straight forward poll. There's a lot of big sequels hitting this fall, and I'm curious which ones you guys think you will be buying or getting for birthdays/Christmas.

The list includes some lesser hyped games that are notable sequels and some new IPs that have a lot of hype. I basically tried to fill it completely. I purposely excluded Sports games, just because they tend to be yearly purchases for the hardcore.

Personally, I'm surprised how many "2"s are hitting. I read somewhere that Sony declared this year of the PS3, but it really looks like the 360 is hitting its stride this year.

Edit: If you plan on picking one of these up for PC instead (like L4D 2), please do not check the box here.

I so, so, so want to get Beatles Rock Band, but I really can't justify the cost. Plus we've already got Rock Band I and II for the Wii, so we can just pick up the game disc when it gets a bit cheaper.

Rock Band and Guitar Hero do look infinitely better in HD, though...
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

I'm assuming they're selling a standalone Beatles: Rock Band disc at launch. I mean, they have two generations of Rock Band players who already have peripherals.

Assassin's Creed, L4D, Halo and Perfect Dark for sure. I loved the original games in all those series. Possibly Modern Warfare 2 once I see more of it.

Definitely Assassin's Creed 2, I loved the first one.
Definitely Halo ODST, gotta feed my Halo addiction.
Probably Bioshock 2, the first one was great.
Brutal Legend... that's the one with Jac Black, right? Gotta have it.
Hopefully Modern Warfare 2 if I can fit it in.

I voted for 4(!) FPS and the one I didn't vote for (L4D2) is 51% likely if everyone I know gets it and I can find it on Amazon on discount.

The interesting thing is, all of the FPSs have some facet you can't find on the others.
Bioshock 2 - Immersive Single player
ODST - Cooperative multi (4 players + Firefight)
MW2 - Competitive multi
Perfect Dark - Retro (and with the multi challeneges I so look forward to)
...and my maybe L4D2 - cooperative/competitive (I don't what you'd call it, but its different)

I looked at Arkham today online. Sounds kinda cool, with some elements of Hitman. I might pick it up if I have nothing else I'm playing and it gets great reviews.

I'm going to limit myself to MW2 because buying anything else would just be wasting money.

I haven't even finished Fable 2, Far Cry 2, or Fallout 3 - I'm just too much of a Modern Warfare whore.

Ah, yes. From what I can tell there's an almost equal amount of PS3 owners around here, but they are either completely isolated or dual-platform owners. There's just no PS3 community around here.

I have to say, its impressive that three games are indicating a 50% attach rate within MacNN regulars. Not bad.

FPS is the new side-scroller. The odds are good that a popular game will be one.

Yeah, I'm not really surprised. Its what the original XBOX was known for, its the preferred genre of the "hardcore" demographic as I would argue its the most intense of the story based genres. I'm not a huge fan of 3rd person games, mostly because the camera will always become an issue at some point.

This reminds me how much I like how Fallout 3 handled it. You can do both, hitting a button will switch from 3rd person to 1st person. I usually play in 3rd person, until the camera gets wonky or I have to have precise aiming. I think more games should allow that option.

Bioshock 2: The first one was great! Hopefully my brother can hook up a discount since he works for 2K games.
Halo ODST: Need more Halo fix!
L4D2: I'll get this if other here will.
Modern Warfare 2: Can't wait for Nov 10!

I think it really depends on the game. Shooters are generally a good fit for first-person view. I felt like Mirror's Edge was an interesting experiment, but would have been stronger as a third-person game, and games like Assassin's Creed and Prototype would suffer if you shoved a first-person view on them.

I'm not surprised either, but it's interesting. I tend to prefer platformers and third person games, mostly because I *HATE* using analog sticks for first person controls. Give me a mouse and a keyboard, though, and I'm all over it.

I hate using a keyboard for controls at all. The lack of precision in WASD drives me crazy (more so than eight-direction gamepads did, for whatever reason).

Precision comes from the combination of the two. Using a keyboard alone for movement would be very cumbersome in a 3d environment.

I admit its a completely personal preference. 3rd person's big advantage is it gives you scope that you severely lack in an FPS.

While I'm being honest, my disdain of keyboard/mouse comes mostly from the lack of dexterity and coordination to use it. But I don't enjoy gaming from a desk, either.

Release Dates:

July
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 – 7.8.9

August
Batman: Arkham Asylum – 8.25.9

September
The Beatles: Rock Band – 9.9.9
Halo 3: ODST – 9.22.9

October
BrĂ¼tal Legend – 10.13.9
Left 4 Dead 2 – 10.17.9
Forza Motorsport 3 – 10.9

Man, I need something for between now and September. Just my luck GoW2 DLC comes out a week before I'm on vacation.
I think I'll be pushing BioShock off until Christmas, seeing as MW2 comes out a week later.

Exactly. I'm still not 100% comfortable with aiming with a joystick after my year on the Xbox 360. Give me a mouse, anytime. But I'll probably eventually become so accustomed to the joystick, I won't be able to go back to the keyboard and mouse, now that I almost exclusively game on the Xbox 360.

Driving a warthog in halo with a mouse and keyboard was fun, I used to be able to slide it right into the blood gulch base, just where the door was. Driving with the Xbox control, definitely doesn't match the experience...

Still gotta wait another couple of months for Halo 3: ODST...

Strange you should say this. I hooked the Xbox up to the TV and sat down on the couch the other night (its usually on the desk hooked up to a monitor next to my iMac, with me in a deskchair).

I hated it. Couldn't get used to having cushions and no arm rests. One *NEEDS* to suffer when there are RPGs and AK-47s going off around you. Oh yeah, having the sound from the TV instead of headphones was also bizarre.

It is said that humans are the most adaptable creatures. Maybe. But please don't fook with my gaming setup.

I suffer in that my back and ass get tired because I'm constantly leaning forward in an alert position. I can't (competitively) game in a reclining position.

Surround sound is the tits though. Its saved my life a handful of times (Not to mention this weekend I started picking up on enemy footsteps more clearly).

I'll be pouncing on ODST and L4D2, but not much else right now. I'm still planning out how to work through the glut of great older games (just got my 360 last week). Ugh, not to mention all the XBLA stuff... I got a fever, and the only prescription is some Castle Crashers.

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species
