Yeah, you'll get used to the no-windows very quickly. Not a problem.

Let me try it another way.

Both this and a minivan imply you don't give a shit what the thing looks like. The difference is the minivan implies you don't care because you wear black socks with your sandals, what I bought implies you don't care because you're on the job.

Which is what I am most of the time, and this has on the job amenities, like no windows, and a design presupposing a lifetime of abuse.

That said, I thought the Sienna was pretty hot for a minivan.

It should be pretty easy to get something welded under the windows should I decide to turtle up completely.

I'd be amused by someone trying to shatter the back window only to find a steel plate.

Minivans are pretty damn useful these days. The Odyssey and Sienna both have a payload of close to 1400lbs, the Sienna has the added benefit of 4WD, although the suspension is a tad soft for the load. They make excellent workhorses too, with surprising towing capabilities. The Honda outperforms the Sienna there, due to the fully independent rear suspension and the more rigid setup.

In fairness, they're also very expensive compared to his work van. I'd only get one of those if passengers are also an issue, which is clearly not the case.

Absolutely. Although the Grand Caravan in the base configuration is less than $20k.

The Sienna was listing for about $2K more if I bought a four-year-old one.

Not a bad deal. AWD, car plates, and easy passengers are all good things. I'd venture it's safer, too.

I'm exchanging that for cheaper, easier to modify the interior, and meant to be brutalized.

Whoo-hoo! Found the place where you go to get this kind of shit for your truck.

I need carpeting, stat! I know I could do it myself, but I'm totally happy letting someone else **** with it.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, and it doesn't surprise me in the least... there's a non-trivial improvement in how I'm being treated by other drivers.

Man in a white van is to be treated seriously.

The best vehicle I've ever owned for that purpose was an old ex-Army Land Rover with double T bars for bumpers. Even cabbies gave ample space.

I'm hoping I can anchor myself in not wanting to mess up all the contiguous open space I have.

In my head I only need:

1) Carpeting on the floor
2) Maybe one of those shelves (which I gather are relatively easy to remove)
3) Maybe a ladder rack

Futon would take too much space, and I don't drink coffee, but the sleeping bag is an awesome idea.

I did realize I should have a couple pillows as ass protection for emergency passengers.

Interesting.

Fear doesn't kick in for me until I'm dealing with an actual truck. This is even in tiny cars.

The kind of things I'm noticing are more respect oriented (I would guess). I'm trying to turn into stopped traffic, and the driver of the relevant car makes the effort to get my attention and let me know they're going to let me in.

This would happen once a month in the X5, while it's happened three times since I've bough the van.

Speaking of new vehicles, this rolled off the truck here bright and early this mornin'. She's getting prepped for her new film, guards, and tint.

Those Pirellis probably won't last very long.

Here it's 35% on the back and sides but I have gone as low as 30% on a few cars.

and there's a `74 911S Targa in the 3rd. I have no idea why the Honda was there, one of the guys is probably working on it for a family member. I didn't ask.

The BMW. Same way you can date a random 18 year-old at 40 but it won't give you the street cred of banging a 60 year-old Christie Brinkley on the regular.

Off the cuff here, but there are 2 exceptions (what I call "effects") that I want to point out, and there are exceptions to these exceptions, but in general these are uncannily correct.

1. The Classic Car Effect (aka. CCE): Once a European luxury car reaches 20 years of age, public perception of it shifts to the positive. Example, the BMW E30 3-series and E28 5-series are now seen as "retro cool", same goes for the Audi Quattro, X300 series Jaguars, and numerous others. Exceptions are physically larger cars, they take longer to hit the CCE mark, but eventually even they reach that status as well (like 70s and 80s Bentleys and Rollers).

2. The Lamborghini Effect: A car that's so exotic and/or rare that a sense of awe overpowers negative reactions. Exceptions; (ironically) the Gallardo (not very rare), red Ferraris*, and nearly all modern Porsches**.

* People who see you stepping out of a Ferrari (more specifically a red one) don't typically ask about the car's performance traits, they ask about what you do for a living or how much it cost ("How much was that?"). Because, more often than not, they're purchased as reputation enhancements (aka. status symbols) due to pedigree, not for their amazing handling. The CCE does apply, but you have to go back the 50s and 60s to see it (or drive a 308/328, aka a "Magnum car").

** Porsche drivers are usually d-bags on the road, often it's by choice, but also because it's harder than you think to not speed in a Porsche (those flat-6s live to rev). However, the CCE applies to them too, it's simply more delayed than most, and settles in at ~35 years.

On a personal note, I've long since stopped caring what the public thinks about what I'm driving, their problems with it are just that, their problems.
