So the news this morning is that Aladdin Systems is now Allume. That's almost as bad a corporate-invented name as Verizon. I guess I missed the whole lawsuit, but that's a big brand that's about to disappear.

Then again, I think StuffIt is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Perhaps it's just me?

I didn't buy stuffit for OS X, I have the free expander and I just .zip everything in OS X I need to compress, I have sent many Mac OS X .zip files and never had a problem with Mac or PC people.

Does anyone even use their other product anymore? I used a trial of Spring Cleaning back in OS 9 and it was alright, other than being free I would have never brought it.

Stuffit works better than zip for me. It compresses smaller and faster. I got a free copy with .Mac last year - I was a paying customer before that.

Stuffit is still relevant - especially if you host files on a server with a bandwidth limit.

i'm pretty sure there was some article saying that mac os x's zip function is better than stuffit.

and its most certainly not faster, by the time stuffit is actually launched i could have unzipped most files with os x.

Yeah, this is just what we need--another corporate-speak pseudo-word name.

I think it's a good thing that Apple has removed its reliance on Stuffit for file transport. Now we have .zip, .dmg, as well as all the Unix stuff like tar, gz, etc. Bye bye, Alla... er, Allume, you can now quietly go the way of Iomega.

add to the list of Cassady & Greene (SoundJam MP, Conflict Catcher) and some others that I can't think of right now.

Here's hoping. Seeing a VISE installer nowadays is usually indicative of the impending presence of crappy software on your HD.

I've also ditched Stuffit for Winzip on the PC. I can't stand it on either platform! Down with them!

Agreed; hence the "usually" qualifier.

Who cares what they call themselves. Stuffit is on its way out and that is all anyone really uses from that company anyway.

Smell ya later "Aladdin".

Stuffit is fading away to irrelevance. Built-in zip is faster and more convenient.

That's what I used for comparison. I compressed a TIFF (28MB). Stuffit compressed smaller and faster than MacOS X's zip function.
