We're not going anywhere. Relax. Even if you die, there are plenty of people spawning off half-breeds of themselves to make sure this species will continue.

Oh Yeah? An U.S. official thinks otherwise. It was probably one of those forest fires caused by spontaneous combustion. Roswell-style.

A nameless one, at that.

Let's piece it together, though:
1) huge explosion
2) intelligence indicating nuclear test possible soon
3) happens on anniversary of country's founding - where big demonstrations of military might usually take place
4) bigass mushroom cloud.
5) U.S. presidential election imminent

Forgive me if I don't find the forest fire story terribly convincing.

Maybe the People's Central Repository for Kim Chee went bad. When a jar of that stuff outgasses, it can be violent.

In WW2, we saw the holocaust. "Never again". Yet it does happen again, and what does the UN do about it? Not a damn thing.

The UN is a meeting place for a meaningful dialogue to take place between the countries of the world - it is not an executive body.

Can't you fukking learn what it is for fukking once???

But it's hilarious. Genocide can be taking place, and they'll all go 'we cannot allow this.... let's put them under double secret probation' and not move a damn INCH in the offending country's direction.

The UN is a big freakin joke.

Who the fukk cares what you think the UN is. I'm telling WHAT it is. It decides NOTHING, it empowers NOTHING, it was NEVER meant to do that. What do you think the UN is???

Some kind of a Star Trek United Earth Federations bullcrap?

It is a meeting place. If those who meet can't agree on anything then it sure is their own fault not the UN's. I don't even get how you can come to that conclusion?!

It has generally been thought that a common meeting place for the nations of Earth is a better thing to have than not. I think it is a rather good idea but you must have been told it is something else entirely. Otherwise you wouldn't think it was a joke but in fact a rather successful entity in the world politics. Even the Bush administration pleaded there (and lied their ass off) in a vain attempt to get support for their war for Oil or Whatever in Iraq.

Forget about it.

It's not what the UN is, it's what people think the UN should be.

The "meaningful" place is where you're dead wrong.

Bingo. Refer to my above statement.

The UN is a good idea, soley in theory. Unfortunately, it fumbles because it (or rather, it's current leader) would love for it to be the governing body of all countries that subscribe to it. For quite a while now, they've been doing their damndest to try and establish a standing army (primarily though obscure taxes.)

But, at the present, all it is is a fine example of being lost in translation.

What the heck do you find wrong with the 'meaningful' word?

The UN is not just a good idea it is a fargin necessity. The UN is not just a place for the US to spout lies and veto Israel's violations (!!) the other countries find it to quite useful, meaningful and helpful. When exactly was it that you woke up and realized that everything revolves around the US?

You're presuming way too much. I never said the whole thing should revolve around the United States.

The problem with the use of "meaningful" is that it isn't. 99% of what I hear that goes on with that round table of diplomats is that they argue...a lot, and the translators do their best to make sure all similar ideas are conveyed, everyone gets paid a lot of money, nothing gets done, everyone goes home, rinse, and repeat.

In the grander scheme of things, it's a waste of everyone's time and money.

Like I said, the UN is a great idea on paper, but so far, it's execution has been atrocious.

Yeah. "People" and "everyone" are not the same thing. That's why he used "people" to be more specific. I mean, who else could he be referring to?

Er cept I never said what the "people" thought ya old bird.

"it's what people think the UN should be"

Which could be a lot of things. Depending on the person.

You guys really need to spend more time reading and less time hissing and honking.
