I recently had a 1.42GHz mini come into my possession after my dad upgraded to a new Core Duo iMac.

Now, I have no need for another desktop. I've heard people make these into DVRs, Servers, etc.

What should I do?

Boot it in target disk mode and use it as a slow external HD.

I would say use it as a media center. It's a great size, quiet, reliable and speedy enough to serve that purpose. I have a huge clunky DVD video recorder that just records onto dvd and it can only fit 6 hours per disc. It also cost about £300. With your Mini, you could play music, all manner of video in various formats, watch image slideshows, record TV, edit and burn to DVD. It will also play DVDs with VLC so you can easily skip through those annoying anti-piracy messages that normal dvd players make you watch every freakin' time. I bought the bloody dvd, I don't need to watch a message telling me not to steal it. The irony is that people who pirate DVDs, edit that crap out.

If you pay for hosting, this is your way to say $10 a month.

Plus you can install fun things like webmin, mysql, phpmyadmin, and others, helping you become a huge geek. It's what I did with an old sawtooth, and now I'm full of useless info.

Sell it..fast. Macs hold their value well, so you can still fetch a nice amount for it. If you want a Media center I'd use hte money towards the next generation mini especially if it will come with front row and an intel processor.

Second the selling. Sounds like the cash might be more useful to you than the actual computer. And if you end up regretting selling it, just put the money right back into an Intel when it comes out. You should be able to get close to full price for it if you sell quickly.
