Today, we had to day goodbye to our beloved Kyrie. We miss her so much.
The other dog in the first picture was her brother, Bey (short for Beowulf Shaefer). He passed away 4 years ago.
Our lives are emptier today.

Am I the only one who thought this would be about the Trump Indictment?
My condolences. It's never easy to lose a friend.

I'm very sorry, losing a dog is like losing a family member.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

She was a family member. She was a few days short of 12 years old.
She had a few bad things going on. She had degenerative myelopathy. It’s kind of like ALS in humans. Her brother also had it, and he only lasted to age 8. His case moved much more quickly.
She also had some form of splenic cancer. What kind, we don’t know. We went through testing that might have ruled out the worst things, but it didn’t.
She was still getting around on her own, but she was having a lot more trouble with steps up from the back yard, and with getting up on the bed. That’s her special blanket in the last photo. She got to spend a lot more time using our bed than we did, but we didn’t begrudge her that.
It’s been two days, and we both still feel pretty “off.” It takes time to process this sort of loss. One does not “get over” losing such a close friend, anymore than one gets over losing their parents. Instead, one learns how to simply go on without their presence.
I’m heartened by Pope Francis’ statements that dogs DO go to heaven. Or Sto-vo-kor, or across the Rainbow Bridge, or however you feel comfortable naming an afterlife. We feel confident that Kyrie is romping with her brother Bey, and my wife’s “heart dog,” Lobo, along with all of our other, so dearly departed four-legged friends.

My dog is nearly 12 years old, he's been around longer than either kid and about as long as my wife. I can't imaging what losing him is going to feel like, and my heart breaks for those losing long time family members like this. Process it, and maybe do something in honor of her - dedicate a dog park bench, donate to a rescue service, or something that will help you channel your love for her and the feelings of loss into positive action. Dogs are incredible.
