Tomorrow marks my first day as a substitute teacher at a local high school. In the remarks by the teacher for tomorrow, it is noted "7th period cheer is in room B-2."

What is cheer? Cheerleading? This is supposed to be a social studies class....

It's sex and drugs, naturally.

Maybe Cheer is doing a promotional infomercial.

I found out it was one giant babysitting job. I'm ok with it.

Ha!
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Like a school-wide pep rally? Or designated unstructured time with a smaller group?

My high school had "harbor groups", which was about 15 minutes a day in a certain classroom just for hanging out. I'm not sure what purpose it served but we mostly dicked around with instruments in the band room.

We had "freshman center" in 9th grade.

One period of unstructured time, but in a classroom, with a babysitter teacher available to help us with homework or whatever.

The year I was in, the teacher tried to make it structured and hand out assignments. She didn't last the whole year. We made her cry several times.

Edit: the point behind this was only crazy overachievers didn't have a free period, and they didn't want freshmen to have that luxury.

Having a teacher watch over you is "cheer".

Orwell would be proud.

That sounds like study hall. Where if you didn't have homework to do, you could get away with quietly passing notes or playing solitaire.

So why "cheer"? Who was doing the cheering?

Also, I'm so glad high school is (very) distant memory.

I went to an all boys school, we didn't have any cheering of any kind.
