I recently had the joy of naming my new G4 (its hard drive, rather). It now goes by "Giggleflop" in honor of the gigaflop. I'm just curious, but what does everyone else name their machine?

dlindsay17,
your name "giggleflop" is so cute! I really like it. The play on words is very silly sounding.

Makes me want to giggle when I say it.

BTW, my hardrive name is: Ocean Blue

The icons on my desktop representing my hard disk partitions are: This is not a HD and Other. My names aren't very exciting. To add a special touch, one is labeled blue, and the other is labeled red. This gives them a little color.

PowerBook G3: Condor
iMac DV Strawberry: Shortcake
Heavily-modded PowerCenter: Big Red

And various other Macs that have pretty standard names or descriptions of what OS version, etc. they're running... those three are the ones I used daily, the rest usually just sit there so I don't care about 'em.

My friend just started using Linux so when he came over he named my HD "/dev/hda7". I'm not very creative so I can't think of anything better at the moment.

I have always named my main hard drive "Darwin" because my computer is always evolving and changing. When I move to the next system, the first thing I do is rename the hard drive to Darwin and then rename my old system back to Mac HD. Like a changing of ownership ceremony.

Well I used to try to think of cute or silly names (Ralph, Phred) then I started naming my syquest disks after monty python characters but then I became infected with a hardware obsession and now have many HD's So I now name them to help me easily identify them

Cheetah, Barracuda, Microp1, Microp2 etc (I have 5 Micropolis drives)

But the drive that came in my G3 Is an IBM drive so I named it Yosemite because I don't want to have IBM on my desktop the PC geeks won't shut up when they see it

My hard drive is named The Brain

My other hard drive is named Collusus. Collusus was the name of one of the computers in the first movies about computers I ever saw -> The Forbin Project.

Current HD is Romulus

Previous machine had System Drive (guess what was on that one), Big Mac and Junior Burger. They were three partitions of my HUGE 1.2 gig drive.

My G4's name is Venom, named after my favourite Marvel villian (I even have a cool Venom icon! , my other two partitions are called Apps and Files (Boring, yes, but I like it that way hehehe). The Mac I used before (a Performa 5200) was named Zachary, 'cause I think that's a damn cool name!

On the (US) TV series Home Improvement, it seems that all equipment is the Binford ______ 6100 (e.g., Binford Chain Saw 6100). Where I once worked, I had a PM 6100/60 AV, so I named its HD "Binford PowerMac 6100".

Naming a Mac is one of the little things that make them so insanely great -- here are mine:

Mac IIsi (my first Mac) 17/160mb: Max
Radius 81/110 (my current desktop Mac) 96/6gb/4xCD: Enterprise
PowerBook 3400 80/2gb/6xCD: Challenger

Here are the ones I maintain at work:
Mac Centris 650 84/2gb/2xCD: Reliant
Power Computing PowerCenter Pro 210MT 96/2gb/6xCD/16xCD: Apollo
Power Computing PowerCenter Pro 210MT 196/12gb/16xCD: Viper (2gb); Gemini (9.1gb); Photoshop (600mb Photoshop partition)
Power Mac 6100/66DOS 24/500mb/2xCD: Blue Star
Blueberry iMac/350 64/6gb/24xCD: DUTCH
Blueberry iMac/350 64/6gb/24xCD: Zoe

And arriving at my house tomorrow to replace Enterprise as my current desktop Mac, a shiny new G4/450 128/20gb/DVD/Zip/56k... although it has no name yet... I'm thinking about Enterprise-A or Defiant... I'm a huge Star Trek fan

I name my boot drive "The Lorax"...
and partitions on my work drive are "Hummingfish," "Brown Barbaloot," "Swami Swan," and "Truffula Tree."

And I named my printer, that tree-eating monster, "The Onceler."

If you know Seuss you'll get this.

I have a Myst/Riven theme going. My biggest partition is called "Atrus" after the wise man in the novells and books (and its my Internet alias also . The second partition is called "Gehn", the father of Atrus and the bad one in the stories.
The lates buy was a 18 gigs SCSI2 drive which I havent found any suiting name for yet. Anyone Myst/Riven fans with some suggestions? It goes under the name "Big Daddy" right now

I got my new G4/450 up and running! I decided to name it Panther.

Right now I'm looking for a great image of a black panther to use as a desktop picture... I have searched and searched the net and can't find one. If anybody knows where I can get one, *please* email me at [email protected]

Thanks!

Currently my Macs are named:
G3 400: Phong (after the character on ReBoot)
iMac 333: jMac (Dad's name begins with j, and in complex math i=j=sqrt(-1) so i and j are interchangeable)

In the past I was building a mac family:
6100/60: Junior
LC: Gramps

There are some really creative names out there. I'm impressed!

Andrew.

Wow. this is one of those little questions that yields big replies.

My first mac was a Duo 230 the previous owner had named "Seamus." I saw no reason to change it.

My wife named our current Rev. B iMac "Howard."

At work, I did have "Artoo," but I changed it to "Cool" because I was using an icon of a smileyface with sunglasses and a bored expression. The icon has been changed many times, but the name is the same.

Our other Macs at work: "Pinky" (a Powerbook 3400 with a hard drive named "Brain"), and "Zaphod" ('coz the G3 upgrade card is like adding a second brain, get it)?

Finally, the aging Compaq PC at my right (used mostly for testing web pages and handling long-filename documents) also has a HHGG name: "Marvin."

The code names Apple gives its computers are cooler their real names. I feel it is my job to undo Apple's damage.

The computers I have owned or set up for family members have been named:

Power Macintosh 6100/60: Piltdown Man

Macintosh PowerBook 3400c/180: Hooper

another Macintosh PowerBook 3400c/180: Kanga (this one almost got a G3 logic board upgrade)

iMac (Blueberry 333): Lifesavers

Power Macintosh G4 (Yikes! 400): Graphite

I named my G4 Graphite because I don't like the name Yikes! If I had a Sawtooth G4, it would have been named Sawtooth.
