What's the best? The Australian icon, British original (not to be confused the sweet sanitarium NZ version), or the other usurpers.

I've got a jar of it in the fridge, its very nice, less salty, a bit more like Vegemite but with the same consistency of Marmite (treakley instead of waxy).

No, but it does have a very slight Guinness taste.

Little known fact.

Marmite has LESS salt in it than the slice of bread you put it on.

Reply to my question from Marmite a few years back.

And I find squirty Marmite a poor relation.

Here's the Website...

Love Marmite.

Never tried Vegemite. Waxy, is it? Guess I'll keep avoiding that.

Here's one shop, you could Google ‘expat food’ for more options.

Love Marmite. Tried Vegemite. Opinion: Vegemite is a poor substitute.

Will have to try the Guinness one!

You can often find Marmite at World Market and high-end grocery stores.

Hard to beat when dipped in soft-boiled eggs :-)

It will be very tough to get hold of the Guinness one in the states, you may be able to pay an extortionate amount for a jar on Ebay.

After what the Aussies did (counterfeiting Marmite in the 1920's, taking advantage of the slow down in Marmite shipments caused by the first world war, renaming it Vegemite and then smugly claiming they invented it) the Brits are understandable quite protective about new developments in yeast spreads (a field in which the UK leads the world).

As a North American currently located in the UK, I can say with some confidence that there's probably not going to be a rising demand for knock-off yeast spreads on the black market, at least from my neck of the woods. You always have to watch out for those sneaky Aussies though...

And I suppose I will break the ice and mention the obvious.

YouTube - Men at work: Land down under!!!! (One of their best songs!!)

Land Down Under

Artist:Men at Work

Travelling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,

"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscle
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover." (Yeahhh!)

Dying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and nothin' much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,

"Oh, you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (ooohh)
You better run, you better take cover."

We are..

Livin' in a land down under,
Where women glow and men plunder, (yeahhhhhhhhhh)
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (thunderrrrr!)
You better run, you better take cover.

Livin' in a land down under,
Where women glow and men plunder,
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (oooo yeahhhh!)
Then I run, and then I take cover. (yea)

We are...

Livin' in a land down under, (underrrr)
Where women glow and men plunder,
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? (oooo da da laa yeahhh!)
Then I run, then I take cover.

My girlfriend loves marmite. She's always leaving it at my place. God I hate that stuff.

Peanut butter is the best thing ever on toast! Death to her marmite!

I don't need to try it, in the same way I don't need to try putting poo on toast to see if it tastes good.

I miss peanut butter so much... sniff... (tears)

Oh I always try things once (except for poo). I've had the vegemite and the marmite. Both were bad. I can see the jar of marmite in my kitchen now. Sitting there. Mocking me. Judging me. Heckling me. Waiting. Waiting. Always waiting. Sometimes I wake up at night and see it sitting on my desk. One of these days its going to kill me....
