Nice. I've used the G3 iBook in the past and although the speed tended to be lacking at times (especially pre-Jaguar), I'd say that it was the finest laptop that I've had the pleasure to use. The heat was a problem at times, so I can't imagine how they may be now with the G4.

Not if they update the Powerbooks at some point soon....although it's not that long ago they did that. Hrm, confusion seems likely!

WTF?!? No rumours, no announcements, no nothing - just suddenly there and ready to order?!?!?

Might impressive specs for the price!

Wonder if this means G5 PowerBooks are not far away then?

Else, what's the point of the G4 PowerBook now?

Well, rumors actually have been floating around for a while, especially on the spec of what might possibly the last iBook in the current form/factor before a possible model makeover next year.

The only thing unclear was exactly when the iBook was going to be released. After they missed Paris, expectation was around/with Panther.

Guess Apple figured that the news of the iBook would get lost with the excitement of Panther so they jumped it by a few days.

I really don't think the G5 is ready for the PowerBook yet.. (though I'd be happy to be wrong). They really will need to bump the speed of the PowerBooks to make them...PowerBooks. They do have more/better extras but they need to have a better performance margin than that, too. What was the new G4 chip...maybe that will show up in the PowerBooks soon? I'm guessing March or April for G5 PowerBooks.

I can think of:

Widescreen, Gigabit Ethernet, SuperDrive, Backlit keys, FW 800, Sound IN, PC-Card Slot, DVI Video... and a bit faster processor...

Makes it for me... ;-)

I meant the 12" sorry. I wouldn't give up my 17" AlBook for anything!

Cool announcement that snuck up on me too, but this is off-topic in this forum. There are other G4 iBook threads floating around in other forums.
