I'm glad I didn't invest in stock like a planned when Sept 5th was announced. I don't really see the Touch doing that well at all.

Not that it'd be that much better, but the iPhone was delayed, and those extra days may have been chipped off the buffer between the release of the iPhone and the iPod Touch and subsequent price drop.
A huge amount of speculation and heresay, I know, but look who you're talking to.

Well, I'd say you got the point yourself there, pretty quickly.
It's not an iPhone.

The one thing I haven't heard is if the new WiFi store has video.
If so, NBC must be kicking themselves about now.

FWIW, I've been playing with it at work for weeks now, and I can wait until a v1.5 release.

So how long until someone hacks something together to get IP telephony to work on a Touch? Then the iPhone is AT&T-free.
There IS an advantage to not being in an AT&T coverage area!!

Considering there is no earpiece or microphone, I doubt it.

The mic might be a problem.
But someone could use the headphones instead of an earpiece.
I'm at work so I didn't really look over the specs of the Touch.

Speaking for myself, I'm happy with it. A 3G 16GB iPhone would be the sweet spot for me when it's released down here.

Oh I just hope this means that there is sufficient quantity of the iPhone so it will be available before the end of the year™ as promised by the Steve.
Yurp agrees, I can safely assume.

I'll be getting it soon. We're low on cash right now (VZ FiOS installation + FiOS bill + old cable bill + hot weather down here = $$$$) and I can't wait to get it!

nobody is a bigger mac fan than i am but:
the fact that apple hasn't sold a million iPhones yet is disappointing
also dropping the price by $200 seems like a major adjustment to their original plan....if it were $100 off then it may not look as bad...i see iPhone 2.0 at mwsf
otherwise i thought the new ipods are great....more nano buyers of vdeo and games...oh steve you are a genius!

Hmm I am also a huge mac fan, but unless the sales of the iPhone are completely hopeless, then this price-drop is only to fuel the hype already started.
Steve said he wanted to sell a million iPhones within the year.. or was it within a year? I forget.

In my experience, everyone I know wants an iPhone. Family, friends, and co-workers included. Only two things keep them from buying one, the price, and the carrier. I think consumers are willing to forgive one of those things, but not both together. By bringing the iPhone down to $399, I think that the iPhone has fallen below the reserve price of most consumers, and I think it will allow more consumers to forgive having to change carriers to ATT.
Apple has essentially moved from competing just in the smartphone arena, where they were already very price competitive, to now taking on the entire cell phone market in general. The 4 gig iPhone, while a limited time deal, is now at the same price point as the Helio Ocean, which has traditionally tried to compete with the iPhone on price.
The other big loser today was Microsoft. The new iPod demolishes their Zune offerings. The iPod classic is at the same price point as the Zune, but has more than twice the capacity, in addition to a new interface. The iPod touch is only $50 more, but it destroys the Zune's archaic interface, in addition to having much more features, and the iPod touch lets you download full songs instead of messing around with dinky samples. Apple's got the Zune cornered from both directions.
(With regards to what I'm looking at purchasing, still waiting for some sort of rev B iPhone, 16 gig, maybe fixed headphone jack, maybe 3G. Rumors are we may see it before the end of the year at the Europe iPhone launch.)

My wife bought me a 16GB Touch today for our 7th Anniversary/my 33rd Birthday.
This will be iPod #5 for us:
5GB first gen
512 MB 1st gen shuffle
2 1GB 2nd gen shuffles (one got lost somehow, second replaced it)
I'm excited to have a screen to watch TV shows on, and the WiFi for Safari will be great since I'm a web developer. It just cost me another $20 to buy Cameron Moll's mobile web dev book since I'll have something to play with it on other than my Treo...

Fun filled to the max. Being so many time zones away, its so nice to wake up in the morning and read all the news threads.
Touch seems nice, though seriously apple. Going light on the Touch Apps are we? I mean, you could load up all the fun filled iPhone things and take away the phone part and nto suffer a loss in sales.
I, like many people, will wait for a larger sized version of the touch and pray that Apple includes BT and maybe a camera as well. A camera would be nice, wouldn:t it.
Sigh....

I think Apple doesn't want to take all of the goodies from AT&T. If the iPod touch had all of the same apps as the iPhone, there would be little reason for it, especially with all of the wifi networks that are popping up.

I totally have a good reason to upgrade my 3G 20g iPod now. To think I paid $299 for it, and now I can get so much more for the same price.
The old screen really looks janky compared to the new iPod interface, not to mention iPod touch/iPhone.

That's what we can assume. However, I don't see the iPod touch cutting into iPhone sales. The fact that it does not have a phone distinguishes it enough. People who are buying the iPhone are doing so because they typically need phone functionality anyway. Wifi really is not of much help in this case. As popular as wifi is getting, it isn't broad enough to replace the need for a dedicated phone/data service. It's a nice supplemental feature in the new iPod but I don't think it will take sales away from iPhone especially with the price reduction.

Even if it did who cares. If anything is getting cannibalized Apple is happy it is with one of their other products.

Well AT&T might care. Sure Apple shouldn't care at all, but we don't know the details of the agreement between them and AT&T.

In March 2002, Apple released one with 10GB and a mechanical scoll wheel. for $499(!). I bought it with in iBook G3/700 and got a rebate.
The solid-state wheel iPods (10 and 20 GB) came out in July 2002.

I wonder if the iPhone will get that new 10.5 like dock that the touch has or if they will always keep them different.
