Paper notebook producer Moleskine is attempting to merge together its books and pads with smartphones and tablets, by making the Smart Writing Set. The collection consists of a smart pen and a paper-based notebook with specially-printed paper, which when used together can transfer images, words, and drawings from the physical page to a companion app running on an iOS or Android mobile device, providing the user an instant digital version of their notes.

The Pen+ included in the set is made from aluminum and includes a tiny camera, one that can capture the ink marks placed on the page. The accompanying Paper Tablet notebook doesn't include any electronics, with it said to have rounded edges to the paper and a shape similar to a tablet, but does include NeoLAB Convergence's NCode technology embedded in each page, allowing the Pen+ to recognize the exact position of marks on the page.

The Pen+ then transmits strokes to the app in real time, with the drawings able to be digitally edited, or incorporated into apps such as Evernote. Notes can also be synchronized with audio, with the app able to record during the note-writing session, with markings appearing on the screen in time to the recording when it is played back.

The Moleskine Smart Writing Set is priced at $199 for both the Paper Tablet notebook and the Pen+, with extra notebooks available for $30 each.

How does this compare with the Livescribe pen that uses similar technology? I bought a Moleskine Edition Livescribe 3 about a year ago and hardly use it because the App that Livescribe produced was useless. There was also a limitation on how many notebooks you could use the pen with at the same time.
