what is your view on hacking do you think it should be legal I find nothing moraly wrong with it, its just illegal so I guess you shouldn't do it but if people don't set up the proper safeguards then theyre basically allowing it right. You know kinda like using someones wireless network if the name is public and their is no password I once found one that was named Default, its not my fault that people don't mind.

What is your definition of hacking? This is very important to my response.

What do you mean? If I ssh into my macintosh downstairs, is that hacking? If I install VNC on a computer and log into that, is that hacking?
Are you referring to breaking into "other" people's computer systems?

There are some days when I feel like hacking my PC at work to little tiny bits when Visio or Word or just Windows in general acts up. Does that count?

versus using an unspecific ip address? I'll give that a whirl sometime...
Yes it's "bad." Sort of like investigates walls in a bank to find if there are structural faults and then using those faults to get inside. It doesn't matter that you don't change anything, you're still trespassing.

How is this hacking? How did I get the login account? Am I suppose to have one? Do I try to gain higher privileges than I am suppose to have?
I don't think it's bad to, on a logged in machine, see what kind of stuff you are allowed to do. I use to do that all the time - see where I could move stuff, see what permissions I had, etc. Most lab environments anymore have a system where they don't care what the user does because they can just blow away the machine and re-image it in a moments notice.

That's because Windows of the 9x variety have piss-poor security and multiple user implementations. Getting into one of these machines hardly counts as hacking.

I'm not sure why you're hung up, but that wouldn't be "immoral" as long as you didn't start downloading porn and saving it random places. You found a security hole, you report it to the owner, and if need be, help the owner plug the hole. Exploiting the hole for your own benefit would enter murky grounds.

I know but it would be probably be dificult to plug it I mean they don't release "critical" updates for that system and well I don't really want to rely on third party software.

I dunno, Win 9x security sucks, but it's wasn't hard to 'hack' into Mac OS 8 either...
So wait, first you are hacking into a machine and want to know if it's ethical, and then you want to patch the hole? I'm confused...

I wouldn't call using someone else's connection hacking.

Oh, I donno. If you left your door unlocked, and I came in and ate all your food and picked up any cash I saw around the house, would you have me arrested?
They may be a moron, but that doesn't give you license to take advantage of them.
[EDIT:]
Also, I think what you mean to say is cracking, which is different from hacking. It's an important distinction.

I have some days considered learning a bunch of comp sci stuff just so I could point irritating forum members on a forum I run to a page that would use an IE security hole, let me into their comp and then delete any broswer and mess with their network settings

FYI man, alright. You could sit at home, and do like absolutely nothing, and your name goes through like 17 computers a day. 1984? Yeah right, man. That's a typo. Orwell is here now. He's livin' large. We have no names, man. No names. We are nameless!

You need a new keyboard.
And Hacking makes for a really poor surname.
