Incidentally, for people who mostly want a Blu-ray player, GameStop (at least in my area) is selling 40 GB PS3s for $220. That's about as cheap as Blu-ray players come — good deal if you're not concerned about hard drive space.

A quick perusal of their site lists a refurb 40 GB for $229.

Even if I buy one though, the value is fair in comparison to a stand-alone player, meaning I could go ahead and not buy any games for it and really not be losing that much value.

(Also the difference between the PS3 and its next closest competitor is nearly 30 seconds load time, or 67% increase in wait time. Ridiculous)
Precisely. It's still the best Blu-ray player as far price/performance combos are concerned.

In other news: the PS3 is no longer profitable, thanks to the Slim.

Question for anyone who has an older PS3:

I've heard the old, PS2-compatible PS3s can upsample PS2 games to be hi-def. Has anyone done this, and if so, how does it look? Do you think it's worth getting the 60GB compatibility model for? There's not a lot of concrete info on the Web about how well it works. I see GameStop is offering the 60GB for cheap, and I still play PS2 games sometimes, so I'm thinking it might be worth it. If the image improvement isn't that great, though, I don't think it would be worth the extra power and heat.

I don't think PS nor PS2 games are upscaled. I will test that memory and report back.

Supposedly it was a feature added in a firmware update at some point. But like I said, info is scanty. Thanks for testing.

Yes, it's there. It looks a lot better than without it on. But it still looks like a lower rez game upscaled.

And I've got a 60 gig for sale if you want one.

All glory to the hypnotoad.
