well might as well go with this one-

the questions was whether it was even possible to do this- i'm setting up my parents' network and i figured i may as well learn something while i'm at it.

also, i'm running 10.4.2 on a pismo. thanks.

I'm unclear here... Are you asking if you can get an AirPort Base Station to spoof a MAC address? I have yet to find a way, but that's not a definitive answer; it doesn't look possible, but I could be wrong.

If you're asking if you can use your AirPort card's MAC address in a device that WILL spoof MACs, the answer is most definitely YES!!!

hmm, alright, i see where i went wrong.

i want to be able to alter the mac address of the airport card in my pismo so i can play around with my parents' linksys router.

there seems to be a ifconfig terminal command to change/spoof the MAC address of an airport extreme card (in a powerbook for example) but i have yet to find a way to spoof/alter the MAC address of my traditional airport card which lives in my pismo.

that is all.

Why not just set your parents' LinkSys to accept the existing MAC address of your Airport Card?

yeah, that's really a not helpful comment. i just want to know if it's possible. i'd like to be able to change the mac address of my airport card from time to time. that's all this is about.

To what end? Are you working on becoming a 1337 hax04?

Apple does not make it possible to change the MAC of one of their devices, though this is not to say that it's impossible. I just don't know where to look for a tool to do it. And I have to agree that it would be hugely simpler to change the router settings than to mess with the AirPort card.

According to this Wikipedia article spoofing with the original Airport card is a no go. If you'd get a Cardbus or USB wifi adapter with a more open chipset than the Broadcom ones used in Airport cards you could probably spoof with them.

yeah, i saw that wikipedia article too. i was given hope by the fact that an airport extreme card (maybe just for the powerbooks with it built-in) is easily spoofed with a simple sudo command.

I'm pretty sure all Airport Extreme cards use the same chipset, so if you can spoof on one you can spoof on them all.

Airport card ≠ Airport Extreme card.

Pismos can't accept Extreme cards, and the original Airport cards are simply Lucent WaveLAN Silver/Gold cards with no antenna bulge, so they do not use Broadcom chips.
