Should the US begin using
coins instead of single
dollar bills?

Who, always vacant, always amiable
Wants a coin, of coin gales
Unmindful. Hapless they
To whom the coin is untried...

...seems fair.

Coins are nice when they're in a denomination that you use only one or two of that denomination and nothing else in a transaction. Of course, how often does something in the US cost 1 or 2 dollars even? Never, really.

It works just fine in other countries, but I don't think it would really be worthwhile here because of the price of things and the value of the dollar.

I like the idea of the dollar coin.

I was at McDonalds at LaGuardia Airport 2 days ago..and got a Susan B. Anthony Dollar in change as a quarter!

Design wise:

The Susan B. Anthony looks like the Wicked Witch of the West.

The Sackaj...er..Golden Dollar is very pretty when new. But not sure I care for the "Politically Correct" historical revisionism involved in the myth created to "justify" her placement on the coin.

Funny how America is still in the dark ages when it comes to currency. And yet Americans are 'proud' of their green backs - go figure.

Our currency is worth quite a bit less and we have plenty of use for one and two dollar coins. It's worth it for small, quick purchases like gum, chips, drinks, etc.

A Loonie and a Toonie are nothing to brag about. Unless your country resides completely in an animation studio.

NOOOOOO! Stay paper! My great great grandfather designed them! He designed the other one too till they replaced them years ago with the larger faces.

I think the one dolar is the last one left he made... but you still see those old 5s and 10s with the small faces around sometimes..

The $1 coin is a great idea, but it will never become the standard as long as the $1 note circulates concurrently. Given a choice, the public will always prefer the paper.

There should be a transition with an announcement that the $1 note will be withdrawn in one year and, after that, only coins will be issued. This is what was done in Canada and it worked great. Will this happen here? Probably not. After all, look how long it took the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to implement the anti-counterfeiting features that have been in use in other countries for over 10 years.

As a pool player, I'd love to see the gold dollar coin become more popular and more widely used. Carrying around a roll over quarters vs. 10 gold coins...easy choice.

But honestly, outside of my local pool hall, I'd probably never use them.

I found it ridiculous the last time I went to the US - you end up with quite a few $1 notes in change etc of course. So which idiot decided to make them the same colour and size as all the other notes?? You think 'hey, I'm rich, I've got loads of notes', when in fact you have $10 in $1 notes.

Even in the UK, with the highest value denomination in the world we got rid of 1 notes in the 80s even though then they were worth probably what $3 is now.

Sorry this confuses you. I bet it sucked going to a football game, realizing you didn't have enough cash to buy a ticket, then in dismay realized that it wasn't soccer.

Bring back the Eisenhower dollar coin. I was the size of a hubcap and weighed 5 pounds!

I like the idea of dollar coins, but in practice, I prefer paper. It doesn't weigh as much.

The US already has dollar coins. If you like them, use them.

There's a change machine at work that if you insert a $5 or $10 bill, will give you 4 quarters and the rest in $1 coins.

I use it all the time as I find dollar coins easier. I get 2nd looks whenever I use them, but they've never refused them.

I get pissed when all I have is $100 bills and no one wants to accept those. I always point to the little type that says "for all debts public and private".

I prefer the paper bill. The Susan B. Anthony coin failed.

You know how many quarters fall out of my pockets as it is? If those were dollar coins I would be really upset.

And to the Brit, you know how annoying it is too look in one's wallet and not see the small notes because they are hiding in between the larger notes?

Here in canada we just slap a toonie in our mouth, and the strippers will go to great lengths to take it out of your mouth

I beg to differ. There is a strip club here called French Maid where you win things like posters of the girls if you can toss a loonie and knock off the one they have on their... parts.

That's true, but I'd rather lose a few dollars worth than a $50 or $100 bill.

I am very anti-dollar coin. Every time I go to Canada, I end up with 20 pounds of loonies in my pocketses. I don't like it at all. I'll keep the paper money, thanks all the same.

Nothing to do with coins, but one time I was in the grocery store, and gave the cashier, a young girl of maybe 17, a two dollar bill. She told me there is no such thing as a two dollar bill. If they do away with the dollar bill, I can imagine the kids of the next generation getting confused when someone presents them with a paper dollar.

Oh, I do use them up. I just don't like all those coins jingling in my pockets. I usually end up piling two dozen coins on the counter at duty free on my way back.
