I need a new printer. The HP cp1700 I have has expiring ink all the time.
My needs:
It must do 13x19 tabloid and super B/A3 paper. It does not have to do larger sizes. Faster is better but it must be the BEST photo quality. It would be best of the ink jets did not clog. At least the old HP unit had replaceable jets.
What can be used intermittently, once a month or so, for just big pictures and not dry out or go bad somehow?

Canon inkjets are probably your best bet.
The current model i9900 is a great printer without doubt. But next month, the new Pixma Pro9000, which uses better inks, will ship. Both of those use 8 colors of dye ink. Next year, the Pixma Pro9500 will ship, which will use 10 (!) colors of pigment ink.
All of these printers are on Canon's site ( Photo Inkjet Printers - Canon USA Consumer Products ).

I have, use, and love, the Epson R1800. But it's more of a photo specific application.

The Canons I listed above are dedicated photo printers. The reason I recommend them is that Epsons have no tolerance for sitting idle. Month-long breaks between print jobs WILL result in clogged heads in an Epson, whereas a Canon can handle that without trouble.
Both the Canon and Epson produce prints that will astound most people.

I just spoke to the Canon people - problem - none of these printers have an ethernet connection nor can one be added. Only lesser picture quality printers have network connections. This is a big problem as I have several computers from which to print.

No, that's no problem. Just get a USB print server, or connect it to a Mac and use Printer Sharing.

I bought a refurbished Epson R1800 off eBay. It has had problems from the start. I contacted Epson and they said the printer needed to be replaced but the eBay seller will not replace it and Epson says that their warranty does not apply to eBay purchased printers. So, I'm out of luck. I will simply give up on having quality photos.

The warranty applies to date of manufacture/purchase, not where you bought it.
Call them again and simply lie about where you bought it. They can tell if it's under warranty just by the serial number.

I've had nothing but trouble with Linksys print servers, so I'd suggest buying one that actually states it supports Mac OS.

Do you want to sell the R1800?

All I'd have to add to this thread is that I have an Epson 1400 and I love the 13x19" prints it produces.

Well, you meant to say that it's pretty good for a $69 printer
