I know I know, it's not a 'cartoon'.... i was referring to the muppet version of the show.

Of the shows I have seen recently, the two fan favorites that really haven't aged well are Voltron and Thundercats, particularly the former.

ThunderCats by far has the worst voice acting of any popular 80s show.

Oh, totally. Even as a dumb little 4-year-old, I could tell the way those people talked wasn't at all natural. Of course, I still loved the show.

Thundercats was a great kid's show, but the dialogue written for it was often very simplistic. It was definitely aimed at young kids, but it doesn't wear well for older audiences because of simple dialogue, which stands out even more for me than poor voice acting. I do know that Mumm-Ra was a kick ass villain.

OTOH, those explicit outtakes are pure genius.

Ren & Stimpy began in 1991 and thus was not a "'80s" animated TV series.

Simpsons BARELY qualifies (if it even does) because it began 13 days before 1990 (i.e., ONE episode in the '80s

I would say these two are '90s animated series, not '80s animated series.

The problem that ThunderCats demonstrates is that when you make a "kids" show, you need to at least give the kids you're aiming at credit for having a little brain power. Instead, most of these shows are WAY to stupid for young kids and so the kids ignore the story. "Classic" cartoons were made for adults as well as kids, or even just adults with a thin veneer of kidness. To quote Bugs, "I already have a bad name for the Easter rabbit..." Kids wouldn't get that, but their parents sure would-and did. The more old cartoons I get to see, the more I detest what passes for kids' animation today.

Robotech without a doubt. Characters actually died in that cartoon, which was a huge polar opposite of GI Joe where everyone managed to escape precarious situations unscathed.

Volton was awesome.

M.A.S.K. kicked ass.

Going into the early 90's, Taz-Mania cracked me up.

Even when they started editing those cartoons, they were great-you could tell they were edited and guess at what was edited out. The same for Tom and Jerry, too. Oh, and MGM managed to make HORRIBLE Tom and Jerry cartoons between the time Hanna and Barbera left and Chuck Jones joined up. Those '60-'62 cartoons were excruciatingly BAD!!! Gene Deitch directed the worst "name" cartoons ever, and his "efforts" were apparently the first animation outsourced (to Prague) from Hollywood. The wiki on Tom and Jerry has some really good information on this period. They only made 13 shorts, but they were so very bad (from a T&J fan standpoint) that they seem to have been a lot more numerous.

The usual suspects have all been mentioned (Transformers, He Man, Thundercats, Danger Mouse etc..) So here's a few that I liked but unless I've missed something, havent been listed -

Star Fleet - Its puppets, not a cartoon, but the thread title says animated series, puppets are animated, and the first post lists Fraggle Rock
Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors
( Last edited by ajprice; Mar 17, 2009 at 05:42 PM. )

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I know that Starcom had the awesomest toys ever.

Little dudes with magnets, and most of the toys were spring activated and moved. It was/is the coolest toy.
