So the only reason I ever use xemacs is when I want syntax highlighting. I know that emacs can do it, but it just does underlining and bold text, in other words really ugly and even harder to read.

So how do I go about changing the colors in emacs... I mean can I have instead of underlining for variable names, have the variables appear as blue? What sort of stuff should I put into ~/.emacs to get it to load up this color scheme? Ooo, and can I even use color?

Don't know about emacs, but syntax highlighting with colors works fine with vim.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

if your running 10.2, then you can
set the terminal type to xterm-16color
and then in emacs, do a font-lock-fontify-buffer if it is in a
language mode.

Depends on which EMACS you're using. If you're using the Aqua EMACS compiled off the CVS tree, you just add these lines to your .emacs file:

;;
;; Syntax highlighting for all files using font-lock-mode.
;;

(global-font-lock-mode 1)

That will "color up" the text in all files in modes (C, HTML, etc.) that are pre-installed on your EMACS.
