I deleted a few derailing posts. We all managed to enjoy the Merry Christmas thread without derailing remarks. Let's extend the same courtesy to finboy's Kwanzaa thread. There is always the PWL for those wanting a debate on any holiday's merits.

I don't know much about Kwanzaa, but I'm in favor of more holidays.

Happy Kwanzaa finboy!

That's not a bad question, sans the 'hell' part...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwanzaa

An African-American scholar, social activist, and convicted felon, Ron Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 as the first African-American holiday.
Karenga said his goal was to "...give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and give Blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society."

The name Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza", meaning "first fruits". The choice of Swahili, an East African language, reflects its status as a symbol of Pan-Africanism, especially in the 1960s.

Maybe I should have started a thread in there, then.

Today is about collective economics I think.

Joyous Kwanzaa.

Finboy, it's great that you're promoting and explaining a holiday few people, myself included, know anything about.

Don't feel bad. Wikipedia is your friend. Heck, the holiday wasn't even invented until about 40 years ago. So in a way, everyone's a newcomer.

What's so sad about it? They're both secular celebrations invented in the 20th Century.
