Comparisons

My macbook pro is 3 years old and 2gb or ram. 1gb to parallels and 1gb to Mac and hauls ass, the fastest computer I have yet to be on.

My mom just bought a mac mini, 2 days old and is slow as hell. The only thing it has installed on it is Parallels and has 200mb of ram dedicated to it which leaves 800mb to Mac. It takes a good 20 seconds to start any program.

We compared by opening Word, nothing gnarly.

Why is this? Does the Ram really do that much of a difference?

More RAM indeed.

Running Leopard with anything less than 1GB isn't going to be nice, not to mention at the same time you are virtualizing an entirely separate operating system running on a paltry 200MB of RAM.

The Mini has reason to be slow. When I run Fusion (1GB to XP) I have 1GB left over for OSX and I feel the slow-down once I run one or two more apps.

Get 3Gb of RAM in that mac mini and then give at least 1Gb to XP when running another OS.

RAM is cheap.

Also consider speeding up the mini if you want using an external 3.5 7200RPM Firewire connected drive as a boot drive.

What version of Word are you using? The latest (2008) or an older one? If it's an older version, then Rosetta will slow down your system if you have only 1 GB RAM.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

One, the mini is not half the computer your MBPro is.
Two, I agree that the best way to help is to give the machine more RAM. Unfortunately, the mini is not that easy to upgrade. Here is an article showing you what all is involved. However, since it is relatively new, you may consider pursuing an exchange. Good luck.

Mac Mini with 1GB is too less RAM especially when running Parallels. Mac Mini doesn't have dedicated video RAM. 1GB divided between Mac, Windows, and video card is going to make your computer slow.

Upgrade to at least 2GB. Allocate at least 500MB to Parallels, leaving you with 1.5GB for the Mac.

Hyteckit hit the nail on the head with the graphics card issue. The only systems with a dedicated graphics card are Mac Pros, iMacs and Macbook Pros.
