My wifes MBP is taking over half a minute to shut down. I dont think this is normal. My MB shuts down in about ten secs.

All she does is type papers, nothing else. Any thoughts?

I agree that something is a bit off with that. The first two things I would recommend trying are running fsck while booting and Apple's Disk Utility. On this site, about halfway down the page, there is information on how to do both. Try those things and report back if the problem is not solved.

shut down or sleep?

if its sleep, it may be writing everything to the sleep image file. Did you check the hard drive for errors, i.e., fschk

This is during shutdown. You know how when you boot up, at about 3/4 of your screen centered you get this little pulsating circle spinning clockwise? Well this is what she gets on here computer when she shuts down, as if the computer is "thinking". I did both things mentioned above. Everything was ok. Rebooted, and shut down again. It's still taking about 30 seconds exactly from the time I hit shut down until its actually powered off.

That time is being taken up by closing processes and saving files. SOMETHING is there, in the background, being active until she shuts down.

What app does she use to type her papers? Does she have a billion different editing windows open while she's writing (like I do)? Does she have Preview open to look at PDF articles, Safari open to get current data, etc.? I do all that, and when I shut down, I FIRST shut down all the apps I'm using. That makes shutdown pretty zippy...

If that's not what's going on, check out Activity Monitor to see what apps and processes are running just before she shuts down. That'll help with figuring out what to do next.

Ill check that out. The only thing she uses is MSWord. And I'm good at making sure nothing is going on before I shut down. At work now, but when I get home I'll give activity monitor a go and give you guys an update. Thanks for help.

I had this issue...

It may be the case that some daemon or something is running that uses the network that does not time out properly.

Try this:

go to System Preferences --> Network --> Airport and make sure "Disconnect from wireless networks when logging out" is checked.

See if that helps.
