Mail.app search failure

When I do searches in Leopard's (fully updated) Mail.app, it defaults to searching by subject, and that works fine. It also works fine if I pick "to" or "from" to search. But if I pick "entire message", it totally fails -- it won't search for the search term in any field. For example, I know with complete certainty that some emails sent to me contain my name, but it reliably says "0 Found".
Anyone got any ideas how to fix this and make it search again?
The problem occurs on all my accounts -- my regular personal IMAP, MobileMe IMAP, and my school IMAP.

The only thing I could think of is to force a complete re-indexing of spotlight.
Have you tried Spotless or something similar ?

I don't think it's the Spotlight index, because if I use Spotlight itself (i.e. from the menu bar, not from within Mail), it works just fine.

If spotlight is working and other searches are working - that doesn't seem to be the issue.
It doesn't work when just searching Inbox does it?

Searching the "entire message" doesn't work under any circumstance, regardless of whether I've selected just a particular mailbox, or one of Mail's aggregated folders.
When I click in the Search box in Mail and start typing, in fact, I can see how the button for "Entire Message" is selected first and after a split second it changes to "Subject".

Weird. So it's not a spotlight problem.
Maybe the Mail user account is borked ?
Or could it be a secret MobileMe "feature" ?

Well, this started recently (maybe a month ago), and the mobileme account has been there much longer than that...
What exactly are you referring to with "Mail user account"? The OS X user account that I'm logged in with?

I encountered this after a migration from a PBG4 to the new MBP. Migration Assistant moved my email and documents over and the search was broken. I used the "Rebuild Mailbox" option in Mail and this solved the problem.

OK, I tried rebuilding the three inboxes and it made no difference.
Even weirder, though: if I set it to search "all mailboxes" instead of just "inbox", it also finds them. So it's really just searching the damned inbox alone that won't work. W...T...F...
