Hmm, that razor isn't doing it for me at all. When I first saw it I knew the battery wouldn't be good for 2 reasons. 1) Motorola phones all have poor batteries 2) this phone is thinner then most and must have a smaller battery.

I was right:
"According to the manufacturer the phone provides up to 200 hours in the standby mode and up to 3 hours in the talk mode."

And you have to remember they inflate those numbers for ideal situations. If the phone has been in standby mode for a day and a half you are looking at 20 minutes of talk time remaining.

With my SE I am used to charging it once a week.

The Razors outside screen is pitiful, I much rather see a pict of someone who is calling then a number, also the screen is not visible in sunlight.

The OS is ugly and the keyboard has no tactile feedback, great for SMSing.

Not to mention who in the world would want to pay that much for a phone?

As long as a phone lasts 3 days real world, I'm happy. I have an extra battery for my T610 anyway, because if you use a lot it sometimes won't last a whole weekend. 1.5 days would be bad though.

The Razors outside screen is pitiful, I much rather see a pict of someone who is calling then a number, also the screen is not visible in sunlight.
From the reviews, the Razor's main screen is excellent. As for the outside screen, no big deal.

The OS is ugly and the keyboard has no tactile feedback, great for SMSing.
Yeah parts of the OS are ugly.

Not to mention who in the world would want to pay that much for a phone?
I wouldn't pay $700 US, but I'd pay $700 Canadian maybe.

Everyone payed so much attention to the Razor they forgot to look at the other new moto phones:
  • A780: Linux-based smartphone with unique flip-up keypad. Includes EDGE high-speed data, quad-band GSM, Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera, large QVGA touch-screen, TransFlash memory card slot, and wireless sync of email, contacts and calendar. Available worldwide Q4 2004.
  • V551: Update to V500, adding EDGE high-speed data and video clip recording. Other features include quad-band GSM and Bluetooth. Available in North America Q4 2004. A V555 variant is also planned for Europe and Asia.
  • V620: Update to V600, with new black design and video clip recording. Available Q4 2004.
  • CN620: Motorola's first Wi-Fi phone. Operates seamlessly between Wi-Fi and GSM networks. Based on Windows CE technology.

Here is a link to the V551.

Here is a link to the A780.

Its nice to see them continue with the quadband products.

Do you think though they will come out with a cdma version? The only draw back vs the 710 is the vga camera vs a 1.3megapixle cam which is not a big deal I guess to much. I figured with a larget screen physically a 1 .3 cam would make more scence.

Thanks. It didn't work the first time, but after doing that it works fine.

However, I can't pair up my SE HBH-65 Bluetooth headset.

EDIT: Pairing working fine now.

2 minute review.

1) The K700i is not as good looking as the T610. Not as sleek and not quite as thin.
2) The K700i is faster.
3) The K700i takes MUCH better pictures.
4) It syncs fine with iSync on my TiBook.
5) The keypad is not as nice in terms of ergonomics, and it's not as nice looking either. WTF were they thinking?
6) The screen is MUCH better.
7) The menu system on the K700i is nicer.
8) Battery life seems to be mediocre.
9) RF may be slightly stronger (but my T610 is fine where I live/work).
10) The data connect icon has a computer that looks like it's a TiBook.
11) I won't use it much, but the FM radio works surprisingly well.
12) The sound recorder is kinda useful.
13) The 40 MB memory is very nice.
14) As usual, the built-in ringtones suck.
15) There is no way that I can see to display the great big digital clock like you can on the T610.
16) I don't like the voice control method on the K700i as much. On the T610 it's "Eug", and then you say "Home" or "Mobile" to select the appropriate number. On the K700i it's "Eug Home" or "Eug Mobile". ie. You have to have a distinct voice command for every one. I could see how this would benefit some people though.
17) The unlocking of the phone is exactly the opposite command as the T610, for no reason.

Nah. Overall, it's a much nicer phone. It's not $600 nicer, but nicer nonetheless. I just wish they kept the aesthetics of the T610.

Do you know anyone who wants to buy a T610?

I dunno, not as nice looking, worse keypad, lower battery life and bigger then a cheaper current phone does not make me want to run out an buy it for a better camera. That is why my digital camera is for.

I think you just talked me out of it

Yeah, the main thing is the battery life.

With standard settings it's mediocre, but with Bluetooth turned on it's terrible.

As for the digital camera, I really thought about getting a $500 tiny point & shoot, but the problem is I'd never carry it around.

I use my big digital camera for parties and vacations, etc. but otherwise hate carrying around a separate camera.

EDIT:

BTW, since you're on 850, you're better off with the T616 anyway. For those of us not using 850, the K700i is the nicer phone.

Yes, for now. It will soon be topped in some ways by the S700 (although the S700 is in a different category of phone) and the Razor V3 in other ways, and then by something else in 2005.

But like I said, for my usage and preferences, the K700i is the best. And thus I bought one.

Cool. The voice record function is actually useful, and the sound quality is good. It saves the files as .amr files, but QuickTime understands those and plays them back just fine.

Really? How? I did RTFM but didn't see it, and I couldn't find it in the phone options either.

Forget it, I found it. It was in the display options, not the clock options. Power Save = no clock and Automatic = clock. Not very intuitive but oh well.

I think I have found a new love:

Siemens today announced the SK65, a uniquely designed phone aimed at the high-end market. The phone hides a QWERTY keyboard that appears when the top of the phone slides 90 degrees. The company is calling it x2type or, Cross to talk.

Besides the innovative design, the Siemens SK65 is loaded up with email features. It has BlackBerry software built in so users can stay in touch with the office.

Here are the specs:

64MB memory

Bluetooth

132 x 176 pixel TFT screen with 64k colors

Push-to-Talk over Cellular

Possible SAP software to allow business users to tap even further into the office

The SK65 will be available in Europe, Middle East and Latin America starting in November 2004. Other regions will follow shortly afterwards.

The Siemens is cool, I just wish they put Symbian on it.

PS: I finally got my T637, and the reception really does kick my T610's ass. (even on T-Mobile) Side by side, the T637 has at least 2 more bars, and it hasn't completely dropped out in my room, unlike my T610. The screen is very beautiful too. Me happy now

I played with a Motorola e398 tonight and I wasn't too impressed. The phone was rather heavy. I really, really hate Motorola's OS, it's way too cutesy and complicated. But the screen was great as well.

New review of the k700:

"But the battery life is miserable. I hope that firmware updates can help, but I am quite certain that nothing but an act of god or a portable generator will ever get 300 hours of standby and 8 hours of talk time from a K700i. Even if Sony Ericsson could get another 50% capacity into the same sized battery, boosting its size to 1050mAh, it would still only be just barely acceptable. So it is for this reason that the K700i gets only a "Recommended" rating, and not the "Very Recommended" rating that I really want to give it."

People are saying they get over 3 hours of talk time with the K700i. Worse than the T610 by a long shot, but I'm not surprised. I'd say for me I'd get about 3 days out of it max, unless I use a lot of Bluetooth, but with my T610, I could get longer.

SE claims a firmware fix is coming for the battery problem. I don't know how much I believe them, but it could possibly be a bug in the system that's draining the battery so rapidly.

Damn, with my t68i I was getting 8 days between charges, I couldn't believe how awesome it was. With my t616 I am getting about 4-5 days which I am not as happy about. If the k700 is even less that is depressing

I'm debating whether or not to get a second battery. I can get a 900 mAh one for US$25. I had an extra one for my T610, but I rarely used it since I have several chargers including a car charger.

Maybe I'll wait for a firmware flash first. There have been a couple of new firmwares I think since mine, at least for the Chinese version.

P.S. When is that firmware supposed to come? I'm on R2A041, but they're already at R2J015.

The letters in the firmware are usually just small customizations for brands or languages. It's the numbers you should be interested in. Look out for R3* or R4*.

I'm waiting for the T637's upgrade to give it the same enhancements the T616 got.

I just say Eug's k700. I really like the camera, the updated OS (especially for sending SMS's) the bright assed light and the screen.

What I don't like is the damn buttons, they are so plastic and cheap feeling when you press them they actually stick to your fingers when you release them. Also the unit creaks when you grip it tightly. The t61X has nice metal buttons and also have a nice groove on either side of the phone so you can more easily grip it.

If the price comes down a lot and they come out with a 850 version I might want to get it but I still have my mind on the s700

I took apart my T610. The buttons are plastic. The front lower cover plate is metal though, as is the battery cover.

On the K700i, only the battery cover is metal. The front is plastic. I agree the keypad feel is not as nice on the K700i as it is on the T610. The reason for this is that the keypad area is more condensed, and so SE decided to eliminate the space between the buttons completely (by increasing the size of the buttons), in order to shorten the height of the phone. Personally, I would have preferred to have more space between the buttons and a slightly taller phone like the T610 (which is already quite small).

I too think the OS of the K700i is much improved, esp. for sending messages. And it's faster, and it's the screen is much brighter. I can actually use it in sunlight.

I do need to get my firmware flashed though. There are a few odd bugs.

The letters in the firmware are usually just small customizations for brands or languages. It's the numbers you should be interested in. Look out for R3* or R4*.
Apparently R2E may get rid of some of the bugs. I can't use R2J since my phone is an English Malay area phone, which won't accept the current R2J, which is specific for Taiwan and Hong Kong (Chinese language option). It will accept the R2E though, which is for everyone.

One of the local stores says it's gonna start doing K700i flashes next week. Maybe I'll wait a couple of weeks until they have more experience. Or else I'd have to drive 40 minutes north to where all the phone geeks live (and where the hard core phone repair stores are).

I made a QuickTime .3gp video from that infamous Switcher ad, sized for the K700i. It plays perfectly. Just download it and put it in your Video folder.

Ellen Feiss rocks my K700i

Arrrgh, I so wanted this phone, but between what's been said about the battery life (I already hate my T610 battery) and the keypad I'm not that sure anymore. My T610 antenna is also failing (noise and sudden cutoffs) so it needs to be replaced soon, but I'm not sure if the K700i features are good enough to make me switch.

And yes, it needs to be a SE, I can't live without Salling Clicker and I don't want Symbian...

salling recently released 2.2 vers of their clicker programme which now finally supports (and works!) the K700i. Shame the HID doesnt work with OSX because that would be cool.

Another point, how the f**k did you get 8 days out of the T68i????? i had it for a year and i never had the battery last more than 3 days, if i never used it (no txt, calls, bt or anything) i might have been able to get an extra day in - maybe. My T610 was probably worse.

Ive be able to use the K700i for about 2 before it needed a charge, not very good, but good enough for me

Screen is too small. I want my next phone to have a 320 x 240 screen... Razor or S700, we'll see.

2.2 didn't work for me. It says it has preliminary support only but I guess with my setup there is something it doesn't like. However I didn't pursue it.

What is HID?

As far as i know the HID function is similar to salling clicker but its built into the phone and you shouldn't need any additional software for it work with your computer. It works with XP but not with OSX. bit of a shame really.

HID is Human Interface Device. It allows your BlueTooth phone to act as an input device (mouse) for your computer.

Edit: Ahh you beat me.
