Is it possible to display an icon in the menu bar which shows when you are connected/disconnected to a LAN network?

I dont know of the specific thing your after but you could try menumeters http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/. This cool little peice of software shows the data rates going through you Lan port (or something like that). Plus you can veiw other stuff such as cpu usage and hard disk usage.
