I need a little help here...
I just got a brand new iMac- but still have the ole college iBook G3... Any practical ideas as to what I could do with it?

I use my old laptops around the house where I hang out so that I can easily grab one to look something up online, check e-mail, or lend to a guest.
I often reinstall the OS and keep the hard drive lean in order to help the computer performing as well as it can. On my power book G3 I replaced the HD with a 5400 RPM 40GB I got cheap, which improved performance due to the limited RAM and heavy paging that was occurring.

do I HAVE to reinstall Tiger? I'd rather just kill the admin account (create a new one first) and be done with the old stuff... wouldn't this be enough? I've never formated a mac.

Def give it to your mom.
There's nothing like sharing the love of macs in the family.
To reformat the drive, ie wipe it clean, you need system discs. Either a retail copy of a system that will run on your laptop or the original discs. During the install select "erase and install". Presto. A harddrive that's clean. And less likely to have errors that will eventually cause problems down the road.

I have my old Panther, Tiger, and the disks that came with my iMac with Leopard. That's about it... So just use the Tiger disk? and bam?

Bam = new system install just like new. the computer will still be 8-10 years old, but everything will be reset like the day you got it. That said, you will have to reinstall applications that you want to have on there that don't come with Tiger.
