Time Machine won't offer to delete older backups

I use two external USB HDD's for Time Machine.
When the 500gb was nearly full, it asked me if I wanted to delete older files to clear up space, I said yes.
It works fine.
I use 160gb HDD to monthly backup.
However, all I get is an error message, no option to delete older backups, disk shows as Time Machine 2
How can I get it to delete older files automatically, as 500gb does.
I ran Time Machine several times now with 160gb, same problem.

Have your tried deleting the back-up folder on the 160GB drive and starting fresh?

Is there anything else on the 160 GB drive besides the Time Machine backup?
It could be that there isn't enough space to contain the backup, even after deleting all previous TM backups.

That rather defeats the point of the excercise...
I've gone back to CCC for the 160gb, works fine.

Hi, I have a similar setup, but my question is on how TM actually works...for example, the TM drive is currently almost full with about 10 days of backup, and it seems like as time marches on, the older-archived days are deleted and the next day is added. I am not notified. Is this normal behavior?
On efficiency: I am backing up the boot partition Macintosh HD which is 80gb onto a TM drive of about 160gb. I am getting about 10 days of archive out of this. If I could figure out how to run CCC routinely, say every hour, and clone the boot partition to that drive instead, I would have a saving of 80gb no?

Yes. It's smart about how it does it, though, so for the last few days you have excellent granularity, and further back you have one a week or one a month or similar.

Sure, but you would only have the latest version backed up. If you delete something and don't notice for a few days, it's gone.
