my work is encouraging us to update.

ipad and phone updated. Now I just have to remove all the extra widgets cluttering my screen. How to remove the app widget from bottom dock? (aha, yes there it is in settings... )

Well, that broke a bunch of calls to Python 2.

Had a flood of calls from clients updating and finding USB storage devices are no longer working. especially Sd card readers for some reason (Photographers), but also straight up ext hard drives.
Bad Apple.

Is it painful to jump from 10.12.6 to Monterey? I see it in the app store. I have a disk image of Mojave but have been cautious about updating and breaking things.

I can only report on Mojave to Monterey, but it didn’t break anything important. Shell scripts needed some massaging, but I think that was a Python problem.

Stay away from Big Sur. It’s hideous.

Edit: Was on Mojave for about 3 years. It’s nice.

Thats skipping a few versions. I'd expect some pain. There can't be too many Macs that will run Sierra and Monterey. Officially anyway.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

FWIW, my late-2015 iMac officially runs Monterey. Sierra was 2016.

If you've used an unofficial installer to go past your normal OS ceiling, or some other tool that changes your machine ID internally, the App Store / Software Update will show you later OS versions.

If you actually try to install with the official methods, it will abort at some point. "Your Mac is not compatible with this OS version", etc.

The old ones vanish once they are superseded. Usually anyway.
