French authorities release app to alert tourists of terrorist attacks

France is taking extra precautions ahead of the upcoming Euro 2016 soccer tournament, set to start on Friday, by launching an app to help visitors in the event of a terrorist attack. Named SAIP (Système d'alerte et d'information des populations), the app has been launched by the French Interior Ministry to warn fans of any attacks shortly after they occur, and if the immediate area is still at risk of further attack.
Created in response to the attacks on Paris in November, AFP reports the app aims to alert users within 15 minutes of an incident occurring, with the alert customized based on the user's location. "Unexpected events" in an area, such as sudden breaching of flood defenses, will also trigger warnings to users, advising of potential travel issues.
The app will allow users to monitor up to eight geographical zones, so they can check on areas where family members and friends may be located. It will also offer advice on how to stay safe, with information provided based on the particular situation, the authorities advised.
It is believed the app could help emergency services in the country from being overwhelmed in the event of an attack, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve advised, adding it would "keep the public up to date with what we know."
The SAIP app is available to download now, from the App Store and from Google Play, in French and English.

This is so sad. In Israel, there's an app that warns you if a missile (or missiles) is approaching your way in several minutes so you can take cover before it hits. I think this app is meant for around Gaza area.

Coffeetime is right. The Israeli app, Red Alert, gives warnings for missiles out of Gaza or Lebanon. You set it for specific locales. That allows you to monitor home at work, for instance. I downloaded it during a spat of attacks a couple of years back and set it for All Areas. It was rather chilling to hear all the alerts. Keep in mind that in Israel, a missile alert is very useful. Almost anywhere you live and work will have a bomb shelter. The French are not so lucky. Disarmed and untrained, all most can do is run. In Israel, that's much less an issue. Armed terrorists are quickly countered by armed Israelis. One suggestion: don't always go with what the authorities say. They tend to fear panic and thus say to do nothing. Go with your instinct.
