how can i clear mail

i have two mail items that stop me using it.
they leave my beach ball running all the time
i can't get out of mail without switching my iMac off
i can't use time machine because you have to start from mail to restore old one
could someone help

First of all, if a program freezes, you don't have to restart your machine. Select Force Quit from the Apple menu or the key combo command-option-escape. Select the frozen program and quit it.
Second, if you can, in Mail, try selecting Rebuild from the Mailbox menu to see if the problem can be fixed.
If Mail crashes before you can rebuild or delete the offending messages, see if you can delete them using web mail for your email. Pretty much every mail service has an equivalent web mail, so maybe you can read and delete the offending messages there.
