my iMac is playing up.
i have lion, and mountain lion on a different(split) drive
my outside disc doesn't show on either disc drive
it appears to have gone
PLEASE don't say that because i have mountain lion fitted all is lost
i have deleted both lions from my hard drive and reinstalled just lion. but my problem still exists
no sign of my external drive, which i would like to put mountain lion on
any help much appreciated

When you say no sign, where are you looking? Disk Utility? System Profile?
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

my outside disc is plugged in!

also the iMac now takes about four minutes to start

You don't say if it's a USB or Firewire disk, but... First check that the external disk has power. If it has, shut down the computer completely and unplug everything except what you absolutely need to boot (ie, mouse and keyboard). Especially remove all USB hubs. Reset PRAM. Finish the boot and go to Startup Disk to select your main disk. Connect that extra drive and see if Disk Utility can see it.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
