Just as the title says... late 2008 unibody; I'd like to pick up an HDMI cable for the Mini DisplayPort to connect to HDTVs on whims... but will I only get video or audio as well?

I don't think any of the 2008 machines put audio out the mini-displayport.

Audio wasn't added to the mini-DP until the early 2010 MBPs (one of which I'm typing this on).

It will work fine for video. But once again, you won't get audio.

I had to get the same cable at Apple while on the road in Anchorage for my 13" MBP new last April.
The mid 2010 and newer models don't need it.

*Sigh*

I may be better off with VGA and stereo analog - far cheaper.

Yes, but only on machines that support audio on the mini displayport.

If you want to connect to an HDTV, the mini displayport to HDMI adapter will be much better than VGA.

Far cheaper? No. Monoprice. Cheaper. Always:

HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!

Oooh... And that USB-audio one looks like it'd do me well.

Thanky.

Wrong. Thats why this one has an audio jack and a minidisplayport connector that both go to the HDMI port. It works on the machines that don't support audio over minidisplayport. It can also do audio over USB I believe as there is another version without the audio jack on it.

Look at the picture, its not the same as the Kanex adaptor mentioned at the top of the thread. They do at least 3 different versions.

Right, that's the one.
I don't have mine handy. I thought there was something odd with the 3rd audio plug.
