I remember a long time ago I used to be able to use the arrow buttons in QT Player to display one single frame (paused) after the other. I can't get VLC to do the same, but I guess it must be able to do something like that. So far I've only been able to get it to skip over a few seconds which is way more than I want.
Any ideas?

Check/edit Preferences-->Hotkeys
There's a lot of options in there, not sure if specifically what you want is there but it may be.

Thanks. I know about the hotkeys section, but I couldn't find it in there. That's why I thought I'd ask about it here.
There's a command for next frame, but I can't find previous frame.

There's no previous frame option in VLC, it's too hard to implement says the VLC forums.
