I like wine, I drink it almost every day, and one of the things I use often is very similar to this: The Waerator Electric Wine Aerator (it's the Amazion Daily Deal). It's extra nice because you don't need to let a wine breathe before drinking (something you really should do, because it enhances the flavor, but few people have the patience for), and it works a lot better than pulling the cork or cap and letting a bottle sit. If you're at least a semi-regular wine consumer this is a great investment, or it would make a cool gift for someone who is.

Full-bodied, tannic reds (like a syrah), are typically my favorites, but also I really enjoy a good pinot noir, and a very cold young riesling (with a fresh slice of apple thrown in) on a hot day is fantastic.

Random wine story...

Got into a fight with a waitress once over whether it's pronounced "RYE-sling".

She got so bitchy about it the maitre d' sent her home.

We got free ryesling.

I've always called it ree-sling, but the only thing that matters is enjoying it.

Everybody at the table pronounced it that way, too. Including the person who worked for the wine distributor.

As did the maitre d'.

It's better when it's free, but I can't stand the stuff. The people I hang with now like moscato d'asti. Bleurgh.

Honestly, I'll take a Bartles & Jaymes first.

We actually got a corked bottle from there too, once. This became an event, at first because they were like "yeah, right", then once they realized we weren't full of shit, everybody wanted to taste and smell it just to see what it was like.

I never drink wine any more. I wouldn't often feel like it two days on the trot and I don't want to get into the habit of drinking alone. Thar be dragons.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

It's "ree-sling".

"ie" is a long "ee" sound in German. "Ei" is "eye".

"Wiener" - "veener" (the sausage, the guy from Vienna).

"Weiner" - "vyner" (not a word in common usage)

If I'm drinking a non-California Riesling, I try to pronounce this German name as if I had some clue about German pronunciation. Otherwise I am likely to say "give me the Johannesburg stuff".

There's a relatively local vintner that bottles a late harvest Riesling that is awesome. But even better? Their "Angel Riesling," which is almost an eiswein (which is easy to pronounce). Yes, I like sweet wines - as dessert wines.

When I lived In Cape Town I used to visit here regularly.

http://rustenvrede.com

The largest wine cellar in the Southern Hemisphere apparently (at the time).
That aside their wines were glorious. A bit hard to track down (probably even harder in the states) but if you can find some try some.
