There's currently no stable haxie/hack to do that... Though it is in high demand.

i thought that SS Ver.2 would deal with this functionality... especially after smeager hinted that we should stop worrying about how to make the menubar transparent. well - SS did deliver transprent menubars, but i guess hiding them is still going to take some work.

but you'd think that it could be done... all the code is there in OS X already ready to setup OS X as a kiosk, this just has to be modded to affect the regualr user.

hopefully ShapeShifter will bring a Barmaid style hide/show option of the menubar?

Actually,
sometimes the top menubar does go transparent on me for a few seconds...(I am wearing Soot) when quitting things or logging out etc...and it looks really nice.
Like it has dissappeared but yet is there...Someone a few weeks ago was talking about the fact that they could do this quite easily,
Bar maid was the thing I had been using, Dan the man, you are right...however, it doesn't look like it had been updated for awhile...
10.3.6 or SS.2

Unsanity released Barmaid and if you ever used it it is under your Ape manager in your system Prefs...
Even though they haven't updated it recently...it is working on 10.3.6
So far...it's really nice...
I'll keep you updated

I don't think Unsanity had anything to do with Barmaid. There are many APE modules that have nothing to do with Unsanity.

Smeger, would you be interested in taking this one on? You are the ShapeShifter / ThemePark guy after all, no?

I've been considering it for awhile, but I'm not gonna commit for sure - I'm still pretty burned out from the push to get SS 2.0 and TP 2.0 out the door.

i actaully had no problems using Barmaid... except for the fact that it uses the same mechanism as DVD Player.app to hide the menubar, so you can't have DVD Player open while you're using Barmaid. i did once, and the whole thing grinds to a holt.

here was the massive thread with heaps of us trying to figure out how to hide the menubar or actually make it transparent (but that's solved now thaks to SS 2...):
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=219825

but there was a colection of awesome links somewhere, and it actaully was to Apple's developer site, and it showed the code to hide the menubar, for use in a kiosk. if i could just find those links again...

interesting .... how long has MenuLikeDock been out?

do you know any details about it? like what method it uses to hid the menubar?

it's just that there's no mention of it at that site... and i don't want to just use it unless i can find out a bit of info about it...

Banghazi,
Thanks for the MenuDock App. It's awesome !!! If more people in the thread that I started awhile ago talking about finding a solution to making the menubar transparent knew about this little gem they would be exstatic. I hope you post this gem wherever you can. I know from the forums that many people have been searching for something like this. Thanks again !!!

I don't get it! The only time the menu acts the way I want it is if the MenuLikeDoc app is in focus. Is there a way to make it work when the finder or any other app is in focus?

damn... i swear i can't even remember this! must be getting senile or somethin'.

but thanks for finding that for me. i was actaully looking for that exact post of mine... those couple of links there are to the developer docs that Apple provides for hiding the menubar.

ah, but now i think i recall why i didn't try it... it only works on that one app, not system wide.

now, all we need is something to do this system wide...

here's the links so you can all get started:

Aaarg

Man, my menubar goes transparent all the time, by accident...
When I am running too many things at once...
Not a hidden menubar, mind you, just transparent...
and it looks GREAT
I am running Soot, which I love, but when that topbar dissappears and yet still shows everything, I get all tingly inside...maybe the girl has been leaving me alone too much

What gets me is that with all the high demand for this kind of app, none of the accustomed coders are willing or wanting to create such an app.

well, any 'hack' like this would most likely be free, so the person/people who do it would be doing this in their personal time, or maybe at work - but they're not getting paid for it.

which is why it would be good to have this included in SS, since i'm alredy paying for that and wouldn't have to pay more for a seperate app.

but then again... perhaps it's not as easy as we all think?

This is a pretty accurate assessment. But you forgot to mention that whoever does this will be releasing something for free AND providing support for it for the next decade.
