Does anyone know of a way to select the whole filename when renaming a file?

Like if I drag -n- drop 'this_is_a_picture.jpg' and go to select it, it only highlights 'this_is_a_picture' leaving me to cmd + a to select it all before renaming the file to something else. I have Show all file extensions turned off in the finder.

Here's hoping for a shortcut!

Don't you mean you have "Show all file extensions" turned ON in the Finder?

I believe it will still only highlight the file name (sans extension). This is a new feature in Leopard and personally I think it's great. Don't have to constantly drag-select the name when renaming a file with extensions now. It's much easier to Command-A than to have to use the mouse to drag-select the name.

Not necessarily. If a file extension is visible (i.e., say you receive an email attachment) and drag it to the desktop or save it, the file extension will still be visible. Personally I find the behavior really annoying. I see fewer file extensions in Windows (read: none) than I do in MacOS X (read: nearly every document file that doesn't originate from my Mac).

So you mean to change the extension or just hide it?

I've gotten used to seeing file extensions on most formats. I don't like it, but it's the way of the world and if the files are going to have them then I'd prefer to see them more often than not.
